The Snyder cut of Justice League is set to introduce a host of new characters that were unfortunately left out of the 2017 theatrical version. It might've taken years of non-stop campaigning, but the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement successfully convinced Warner Bros. to drop Zack Snyder's original edit of the DCEU team-up on their HBO Max streaming service, and a release is confirmed for 2021.

Snyder was forced to step away from Justice League due to a personal tragedy and was replaced for the post-production process by Joss Whedon. Following considerable reshoots and rewrites, the Justice League that hit theaters in 2017 bore little resemblance to the film Snyder left behind. The Whedon and Warner Justice League performed poorly both in critical and commercial terms, and the campaign to release Snyder's original cut soon began. The director is currently putting the finishing touches on Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Thanks to 3 years of leaks and reveals, much is known about the differences between the two Justice League movies. Entire storylines will be reworked and a handful of characters will enjoy much meatier roles, but the Snyder cut will also restore plenty of new faces that were cut altogether back in 2017. From supporting characters and cameos to major DCEU additions, here are all the characters fans will get to see for the first time in the Snyder cut of Justice League.

Darkseid

Justice League Snyder Cut Darkseid

Undoubtedly the biggest character addition in the Snyder cut will be Darkseid, the dastardly schemer who was originally intended as the overarching villain of the entire DCEU franchise. Darkseid's presence was teased heavily in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, but the theatrical cut of Justice League removed the character entirely, with the exception of a brief in-dialogue reference. Instead, Steppenwolf was promoted, and his defeat seemingly marked the end of Earth's troubles with the Mother Boxes. This was not Snyder's original plan.

While Steppenwolf will still be the main villain in the Snyder cut, Darkseid will be built up as the true enemy throughout the movie, and when Steppenwolf is finally defeated in the third act, Darkseid makes make his entrance via boom tube before presumably becoming the prime antagonist of a future film. Ray Porter is confirmed to voice Darkseid in Justice League, and the baddie's appearance will likely tie into Batman V Superman's Knightmare sequences and Flash time travelling. Given that Darkseid's original role was to plug a sequel, it'll be interesting to see whether the Snyder cut alters his role somewhat, or whether the 2021 release is faithful to Snyder's original idea, even though there's no potential continuation of the story in sight.

Martian Manhunter

General Swanwick and Superman

In the DC comics, Martian Manhunter is a key member of the Justice League, as well as one of the group's original founding superheroes. The character's absence in the 2017 film felt odd as a result, but all will be set right thanks to the Snyder cut. The director himself revealed Martian Manhunter's presence in his original Justice League, with General Swanwick from Man of Steel and Batman V Superman to be unveiled as the alien superhero. Martian Manhunter won't have a major role in the Snyder cut - no joining in the final fight or officially becoming part of the team, and his true significance remains more or less unknown. However, Snyder and Harry Lennix (Swanwick actor) have teased that the General will be watching over the Justice League, perhaps playing a secret part in getting the gang together.

Martian Manhunter's origin story and appearance make him a tricky character to introduce in live-action, especially within Snyder's darker DCEU vision. Snyder also states that Swanwick is fully aware Clark Kent and Superman are the same person. Evidently, only an alien General with powerful telepathy can see through Clark's foolproof disguise. Martian Manhunter could potentially involve himself in the Man of Steel's Justice League story. The Henry Cavill mustache debacle proves Superman's arc was heavily altered in reshoots, and the pair have history after both debuting in Man of Steel.

Iris West

Barry Allen and Iris West in the Snyder Cut

Barry Allen's DC comics love interest is Iris West, but so little was revealed of Flash's past and personal life in Justice League that Iris's entire character ended up on the cutting room floor. Kiersey Clemons portrays Iris West in the Snyder cut, and the actress was hyping up her DCEU introduction shortly before Whedon decided to edit her out of the theatrical version. Clemons isn't likely to have a great deal of screen time in the Snyder cut; her role was probably being saved for a Flash solo movie. Expect Iris West's appearance in Justice League to be an introduction that establishes her as a future figure of importance.

One of Justice League's biggest criticisms was the shallow nature of Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman, none of whom had been properly showcased in the DCEU previously. Unable to cram 3 separate origin stories into a single movie, none of the trio got the attention their characters deserved, and this is especially true of Flash, who is mostly used as comic relief. Spotlighting Barry's relationship with Iris, even briefly, would've added more color to the Scarlet Speedster.

Ryan Choi

Ryan Choi aka Atom in the lab in Zack Snyder's Justice League

Another character Justice League was originally supposed to introduce ahead of a larger role later in the franchise was Ryan Choi, played by Zheng Kai. Snyder has revealed that Choi serves as Director of Nanotechnology at the S.T.A.R.S. lab and works alongside Cyborg's father, Silas Stone when Justice League begins. Whedon and Warner Bros. ultimately cut much of Cyborg's background and this apparently included swathes of material set at S.T.A.R.S, with Ryan Choi collateral damage in these sweeping edits.

Very little is known about Ryan Choi's presence in Justice League, but just like Iris West, the part was likely a small tease intended to pay off in a later film. As alluded to by Choi's job title, the character is better known as The Atom in DC mythology, and Snyder perhaps had designs to bring Choi into Justice League ahead of a heroic debut as Atom in the sequel. The plan could've been to add the likes of Atom, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter in Justice League 2's final battle against Darkseid. Since Silas Stone was also meant to die in the Snyder cut, this traumatic event could've been the trigger behind Choi's superhero transformation.

Elinore Stone

Elinore Stone in Cyborg Comics

Zack Snyder has made no secret that his Justice League will place Cyborg at the heart of the story, meaning Ray Fisher's character will almost certainly benefit most from the Snyder cut's eventual release. As part of Cyborg's expanded history, Silas will have more to do and the circumstances surrounding Victor's accident will be explored in more detail. However, Zack Snyder has also revealed the addition of Victor's mother in his Justice League plans. Elinore Stone loses her life in the same accident that nearly claims Victor's, but Snyder originally incorporated flashbacks and dream sequences that gave Elinore a small part in Victor's growth as a character. Portrayed by Karen Bryson, Elinore only features in a photograph in the theatrical cut of Justice League.

Green Lanterns

green lantern Hal Jordan

Given all the hints and teases from Zack Snyder, Kevin Smith and various others, it seems inevitable that Green Lantern will appear in Justice League in some capacity. The 2017 theatrical edit featured only a brief glimpse of an older Green Lantern in the flashback sequence to Steppenwolf's initial invasion, and although Snyder has confirmed this shot was one of his, he also hinted that another Green Lantern was originally included. The identity (or identities) of these Lanterns remains a hotly debated topic, with some hoping for Hal Jordan or John Stewart, and others anticipating a less prominent member of the Corps.

According to one anonymous VFX artist, the initial plan for Justice League's post-credits scene was a pair of Lanterns (Kilowog and Tomar-Re) visiting Bruce Wayne to discuss some impending threat to the Earth - most likely Darkseid. This could've built towards Jordan or Stewart being appointed Earth's proper Green Lantern ahead of the Justice League sequel. This alleged scene was cut to make way for the Injustice League tease that ended up in the finished film, but the Snyder cut could restore the Green Lantern material. Whoever ends up donning the famous glowing ring, it'll be a shock if the Snyder cut doesn't feature considerably more Green Lantern action than the 2017 Justice League.
