Themyscira and the Amazons will have greater involvement Zack Snyder's Justice League than in Wonder Woman 1984. In May of 2020, it was finally announced the near-mythical Snyder Cut of Justice League would arrive on HBO Max in 2021. With 2021 now here and the Snyder Cut expected sometime in March, anticipation is high for what Zack Snyder's superhero epic has in store, and with a running time of a whopping four hours, it's certainly going have a lot.

One notable element that it will have is the Amazons along with Themyscira itself, both of which were greatly trimmed down in the theatrical version. We already know about two sections of the movie that will show how feature the Amazons, specifically the movie's history lesson featuring Darkseid's original invasion of Earth, along with Steppenwolf's modern-day invasion of Themyscira to retrieve one of the Mother Boxes, complete with Steppenwolf's original design.

While the theatrical cut's history lesson played as a montage narrated by Diana with Steppenwolf leading the charge, the Snyder Cut's version will be a great deal longer with Darkseid leading the invasion from Apokolips. With the Amazons among the forces repelling the invasion, this means that their involvement in the Snyder Cut's history lesson will be far more significant. Additionally, shots from the trailer show more of Steppenwolf's assault on Themyscira, including one of Hippolyta battling a Parademon while clutching the Mother Box, indicating more with the Themysicra battle in the Snyder Cut.

This also means that the Amazons are set to have a greater presence in the Snyder Cut than their more limited (almost cut) involvement in Wonder Woman 1984. Themyscira and the Amazons, including Hippolyta and Antiope, were seen at the beginning of the film during the Amazonian Olympics. Aside from that, the movie went a bit more into the history of Themyscira when Diana used her lasso to show Steve Trevor the story of the Amazon Asteria, who also made an end-credits cameo, played by none other than Lynda Carter herself. Overall, the role of the Amazons in Wonder Woman 1984 is much more secondary compared to how involved they were in the first Wonder Woman.

Of course, that isn't a failing on the part of Wonder Woman 1984. In the period the film is set in, Diana has long since departed Themyscira and built a new life for herself in the world of man. Asteria's appearance also didn't need to rise above the cameo that it was, as the goal was simply to give a brief overview of her story and connection to the Golden Eagle armor. Altogether, Wonder Woman 1984 has a lot less of the Amazons and Themyscira simply because its story didn't demand that they have a major presence.

They will, however, be much more important to the story being told in the Snyder Cut, due to their direct involvement in pushing back Apokolips in the history lesson and the attack on Themyscira led by Steppenwolf. The vast scope of the Snyder Cut's story has drawn comparisons to The Lord of the Rings, with Snyder's story involving the resurrection of Superman, the formation of the Justice League, the origin of Cyborg, and other huge elements like the Amazons. Fans of Wonder Woman's history can also look forward to a major presence by Themyscira and Diana's sisters in Zack Snyder's Justice League, who will be right at the center of two of the movie's major action sequences.
