Henry Cavill has revealed that he hasn't seen anything of the Justice League Snyder Cut and has doubts regarding how much of it exists. Cavill debuted as Clark Kent (aka Superman) in 2013's Man of Steel. He later went on to reprise the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which saw him pitted against Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader before sacrificing his life to bring down a Lex Luthor-created Doomsday. He would later make a dramatic return, however, when the titular group used a Mother Box to restore him to life in the ill-fated Justice League movie. Although fans have since clamored for Cavill to receive an official Man of Steel sequel, Warner Bros. has remained unsure how to proceed. Regardless, Cavill has insisted that he's still the DCEU's Superman.
Originally conceived as a two-part story (and part of an overall five-year plan) Justice League was originally set to be directed by Zack Snyder. Following up on the threads established in the previous two Snyder outings, it would have brought the superhero collective not only up against Steppenwolf but also Darkseid more directly. Unfortunately, due to a personal tragedy, Snyder was forced to step away. Stepping in at Warner Bros. behest, Joss Whedon completely overhauled the movie. Disappointingly, Justice League went on to receive a poor reception at the box office. As a result, despite two years having passed, a campaign has raged to see Snyder's original vision released.
Efforts regarding the Snyder Cut escalated in the wake of the film's anniversary. Numerous stars voiced their support of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement as it trended consistently across multiple days. Although Affleck and Gal Gadot were among those joining in with the Snyder Cut chorus for the first time, Cavill remained noticeably absent. Speaking with Kevin McCarthy, however, Cavill was asked directly regarding his view of the campaign and whether he had seen the fabled original version of Justice League. Unfortunately, Snyder Cut supporters will likely wish that he was still remaining silent. Not only did Cavill reveal that he hadn't seen any Snyder Cut but he also downplayed just how much of one existed, likening it to bits and pieces of footage cobbled together. "I have not seen any Snyder Cut. I don't know if there's anything that exists, that is a Snyder Cut. I'm sure there's footage out there which has probably pieced together over the years. I'm always interested to see how that stuff turns out...but that is very much chapter in my past."
Cavill also appeared to throw slight shade on Batman v Superman and the theatrical version of Justice League, as he reiterated his desire to reprise the Superman role. "I would rather talk about what is going to happen in the future. The future of Superman. How I can express that character from the comic books - which ties in nicely to Man of Steel. I really like that movie. And I'd like to be able to tell the story from where it was left at that point." Pressed by McCarthy as to whether it was going to happen, Cavill remained predictably coy. "I can tell you nothing, unfortunately. But it would indeed be awesome." Cavill's words, however, will surely play into the speculation that J.J. Abrams could direct a new Superman installment.
The questions posed, however, reveal just how strongly the Snyder Cut campaign has become ensconced in mainstream pop culture at the moment. Unfortunately, Cavill's answers will no doubt anger and otherwise upset a vocal portion of fans. Already in the comments beneath the original interview, some are now threatening to boycott The Witcher - the upcoming Netflix adaptation that Cavill was promoting in the interview. Cavill's responses also go directly against comments made by fellow Justice League star Jason Momoa - who has insisted that the Snyder Cut not only exists but that it's the version of Justice League that fans truly deserve to see.
