The Flash's Knightmare costume from Zack Snyder's Justice League gets explained by the movie's costume designer. Director Zack Snyder's original Justice League vision has officially been restored with the release of his completed cut, which just arrived on HBO Max last week. The famed Snyder Cut is double the length of the theatrical version and features deeper character arcs for the titular team. The bulk of the story remains the same, however, as the villainous Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) arrives on Earth with the goal of collecting three Mother Boxes, which, when united, will destroy the planet in the name of his master Darkseid (Ray Porter).

In the days since Justice League's release, much of the conversation has revolved around a sequence in the film's epilogue that takes place within the Knightmare timeline. This alternate future is what happens when Darkseid successfully invades Earth and Superman (Henry Cavill) succumbs to the Anti-Life equation, thus becoming a murderous overlord. Only a few heroes are left to fight back, including Batman (Ben Affleck), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and the Flash (Ezra Miller). The costumes of the Knightmare scene received special attention due to the clues they might hold regarding the overall story.

Screen Rant got the opportunity to sit down with Justice League costume designer Michael Wilkinson, and we asked about the conception of the Flash's Knightmare costume. It's a vastly different suit than the one he wears throughout the film, and there's a specific reason for that. According to Wilkinson, the Flash's new armor was designed with his next task in mind:

Michael Wilkinson: The suit was created digitally - the idea was an outer shell encasing the Flash’s regular suit and giving him even more protection from his inconceivably fast travel through space and time. His exploration of dimensions and conditions unknown to us seemed to warrant a nano-tech approach to his suit.

As Snyder has revealed, Justice League 2 would have explored this Knightmare world in earnest. It would only be reversed by the Flash going back in time and stopping one pivotal event from happening, thus allowing the events of Justice League 3 to play out differently. Audiences got a glimpse of the Flash's time-traveling abilities in Justice League, but this likely would have been on a much bigger scale. As a result, he would need some tricked-out armor. It's interesting to hear how Wilkinson took that into account when designing the Flash's full Knightmare look.

Whether Justice League 2 ever comes to pass remains to be seen, but at least fans can rest easy knowing they finally saw the Flash's full future costume. The Flash from the Knightmare timeline was briefly glimpsed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but in such a way that largely kept his costume hidden. Now, though, the full extent of the Flash's final Justice League appearance has been revealed, and so has the reasoning behind it.
