Justice League fan Roberto Mata, who launched the online petition calling for Warner Bros. to release Zack Snyder's cut of the ensemble film, has started a fundraiser to produce a Snyder Cut documentary. The narrative surrounding the first ever live-action Justice League film is hardly what anybody expected (or wanted). Initially, Snyder envisioned it as the culmination of his own Superman trilogy, following Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. However, those works proved to be extremely divisive with critics and fans, which made the studio attempt a last-minute course correction to improve Justice League late in the game.
In May 2017, Snyder stepped down from Justice League, citing his daughter's suicide as the reason (though rumors suggest he was actually fired). Joss Whedon, who reportedly was already working with Snyder on rewrites, stepped in to take over the helm - and that's when everything changed. Though WB publicly sold Justice League as Snyder's film through and through, it became painfully obvious Whedon's work went well beyond standard pickup shoots. The entire trajectory of the film was changed, undercutting the themes and storylines Snyder set up. As Justice League received mixed reviews and tanked at the box office, the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement was born, and now those behind it want to do a deeper examination of what happened.

Mata, whose original petition is now up to more than 174,000 signatures, shared the fundraiser on Change.org. In a lengthy post detailing his relationship with Justice League and DC characters, Mata concluded by stating the purpose for his fundraiser:
The fundraiser money will go to a documentary on Zack Snyder’s Justice League Director’s Cut, the search for the truth on what really happened and whether or not the film will ever be released bis ongoing and maybe a documentary about it, might help the cause I started with the petition.
As of this writing, the fundraiser has generated just $80 of a $4,000 goal thanks to contributions from five supporters. It's way too early to say how many DCEU fans will donate money at this point in time, but Mata does have a history of drumming up interest in the Snyder Cut cause. His petition from November went viral as more people saw the film and noticed the variety of deviations from Snyder's original intent, so it's not out of the question the same will happen with the fundraiser. This has been a topic of much fascination for months, with evidence suggesting Snyder's cut was more complete than many believed (something Snyder himself agrees with). The director has been very open about his ideas for Justice League, and many are curious to learn more about his plan, which the documentary would surely entail.
Meanwhile, WB is still licking their wounds from Justice League's underperformance, reshuffling things at the top to improve the vision for their franchise. Once again, they're in desperate need for a hit, but fortunes could change soon thanks to James Wan's Aquaman. After a drama-free production, an early screening of that film went over very well, suggesting the standalone could help DC bounce back on the cinematic side of things as the enter the post-Snyder era.
