When can the additional filming for the Justice League Snyder Cut happen, and where will it take place? With the Snyder Cut officially set to debut on HBO Max in 2021, the collective mood of many DC fans across the globe has been a jubilant one since the news broke earlier this month, but it also leaves a lot of questions up in the air regarding how it'll be completed.

Prior to the announcement, Zack Snyder had also teased his intent to film additional scenes for the movie, and there are currently conflicting reports on whether or not he will be permitted to do so. However, the real roadblock to Snyder's plans is the coronavirus pandemic, which has left virtually every aspect of daily life across the entire planet either shutdown or subject to social distancing. As with the entire film industry, it also now presents the Snyder Cut with a major obstacle to overcome.

To be sure, Snyder's additional filming will need to be streamlined to deal with other issues that are to be expected on any film shoot. At the same time, the coronavirus inevitably makes those challenges considerably more complicated. Nevertheless, there are ways that Zack Snyder and the movie's cast and crew can work around these challenges.

The Coronavirus Is The Biggest Hurdle For Snyder's Additional Photography

Zack Snyder first teased that new scenes would be filmed for the Snyder Cut at the end of February with the winner of the Justice League fan poster contest, for which Snyder was the judge, to be awarded the slate used during the movie's principal photography, and with it the right to be present on set for additional filming. At the time, the coronavirus was doing significant harm in several countries, but had not quite escalated to a worldwide emergency yet. However, that would change by mid-March with the pandemic leading to widespread quarantines and lockdowns throughout the entire world.

The film industry hasn't escaped the impact of the coronavirus, and in fact has arguably been among the industries to feel its effects the most acutely. Movie theaters have closed, countless upcoming movies have had their release dates postponed, and in-production films have had to shut down altogether, leading to massive complications on the release calendar. Though it is now official that the Snyder Cut will be released, the shooting of any new material that Snyder hopes to add to the movie will have to be coordinated around the public safety measures that have been introduced as a result of the pandemic. Since the Snyder Cut won't debut on HBO Max until 2021 (though Snyder has already teased a trailer for it), that affords plenty of time to work out the logistics of the additional photography, but there is also another element in the mix.

Cast Availability Also Must Be Factored Into Additional Justice League Photography

Aside from the ongoing pandemic, the availability of the cast that Snyder intends to be involved in the additional filming must also be considered. Recently, Chairman of WarnerMedia and HBO Max head Bob Greenblatt heavily implied that the budget will likely exceed the initially reported $30 million, and while much of the resources allocated to the film will doubtlessly go to visual effects and post-production work, its does also offer a signal of the overall fine-tuning Snyder wants to do on the Snyder Cut. The major question the additional photography will need to address is how long each cast member is needed and when their window of availability will be.

Though the coronavirus has left active productions at a standstill, that doesn't mean that the Justice League cast didn't have other projects in the works before the pandemic struck. To give a few examples, Henry Cavill has the second season of Netflix's The Witcher, while Ben Affleck is involved in Ridley Scott's The Last Duel. The additional filming that Snyder has in mind will not only need to abide by the guidelines provided to resuming film productions, but also scheduled around the best window for his cast, especially those who will have other projects re-commencing once it is deemed relatively safe to do so. As to the "when" and "where" of those questions, we have some idea of how soon Snyder's additional filming can happen and where it could take place when it does.

When And Where Can Justice League's Additional Filming Take Place?

The ongoing pandemic coupled with typical cast scheduling make the location and timing of the additional photography for the Snyder Cut into issues that must be mapped out much more strategically than the average film shoot. Though lockdowns are still in place across the globe, there are territories that have begun to take baby steps back into normal operations, including film productions, one of them being Atlanta, Georgia and possibly by July 8th with Tyler Perry's studio based in the city. Though very strict guidelines will remain in place, it offers one possibility as a location. The U.K. has also put together guidelines to allow productions to ease back into filming, making it a potential candidate, and with The Matrix 4 having shut down in Berlin due to the pandemic, the tentative aspiration by Warner Bros. for its production to resume in July also make it a possible location for the Snyder Cut to film its additional scenes.

While these offer potential options for locations for Zack Snyder to film his new scenes, the duration of the shooting Snyder hopes to do also bears consideration. One factor working in the movie's favor is the fact that the filming Snyder envisions isn't likely to last especially long, and would be far less extensive than the lost ground that many films halted by the pandemic will seek to make up once they're able to resume. Furthermore, Snyder is known for being very meticulous in getting what he wants in the can. That very point was made by Harry Lennix in a recent interview regarding Martian Manhunter's role being eliminated from the Justice League script, with Snyder managing to mostly film General Swanwick's big reveal nevertheless.

Over the course of the past few weeks, the Snyder Cut has gone from an unattainable fantasy to the talk of the superhero movie town. With Henry Cavill also in talks to portray the Man of Steel once more, it's looking more and more like Snyder's vision for Justice League is finally firing on all cylinders. There are still challenges to his plans for additional filming, both of the kind that every movie must contend with along those that are unique to the current public health crisis. However, with careful enough planning, there are clear ways for Zack Snyder's Justice League to be realized to the standard that he has in mind.
