The Justice League Snyder Cut leaves the door open for more potential content to come, according to Kevin Smith. The highly-anticipated director’s cut is set to release on HBO Max later this year, years after the Release the Snyder Cut campaign started. Many of Snyder’s long-term plans for the DCEU, including a second Justice League film, were canned after the first movie released to a harsh response. With the Snyder Cut finally coming out, some of that unmade material could be back on the books.

The early days of the old DCEU mapped out a multi-film plan that mirrored the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, the lukewarm reviews of Man of Steel and widespread panning of Batman v. Superman and Justice League led to Warner Brothers going in a different direction. Movies like Shazam! And Joker have since found success in very different genres, in part because of their narrative and thematic independence from the DCEU. While Justice League characters like Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman have moved forward with additional solo projects, the vision of firmly connected universe of films has changed into something else since Justice League first released.

The Snyder Cut could be the path back to that original plan, however. Kevin Smith, speaking on his podcast Fatman Beyond, said that the new version of Justice League leaves an open door for possible sequels and follow-ups to come. "I happen to know that the ending that he's got for the Snyder Cut is very not a cul-de-sac,” Smith said, “It takes it to a weird neighborhood, but it's not a cul-de-sac. You can keep f***ing going with the story based on what I've heard from a friend."

Given Zach Snyder’s penchant for the grandiose, it’s no surprise that his Justice League cut would leave a lot of things hanging. The notion of more stories directly following the film should be exciting for fans of Snyder’s distinct style and intended direction with the franchise. With the Snyder Cut actually releasing after years of online campaigning, it suddenly seems like anything is possible.

Still, the odds of new Snyder-verse content being created seem highly unlikely. The DCEU has found much greater success with their current, less-connected model, and the movement toward a cinematic multiverse only doubles down on that structure. With independent projects like The Batman and a heightened focus on HBO Max series leading the way, re-centering Snyder’s original plan doesn’t make much sense. The likelihood of such a move should become clearer when audiences finally get to watch the Justice League Snyder Cut for themselves.
