Zack Snyder has released a new piece of Justice League concept art, which shows the moment when John Stewart's Green Lantern would have met Batman. Green Lantern was originally meant to cameo at the end of the four-hour director’s cut, played by actor Wayne T. Carr. However, Warner Bros. objected on the grounds that they might want to use the character for a different project in the near future, and he was subsequently replaced by Martian Manhunter.

John Stewart was a big part of Snyder’s original five-film DCEU plan. The character would have been introduced after the battle with Steppenwolf in the first Justice League, and he would have joined the core team in the Knightmare future in Justice League 2. In Justice League 3, he would have recruited the rest of the Green Lantern Corp to join the climactic battle against Darkseid. Unfortunately, with Snyder’s version of the DCEU now cancelled by Warner Bros., those stories will never be told. But viewers can get a glimpse of what could have been.

A new piece of Green Lantern concept art has been released by Snyder himself on Vero, showing what John Stewart’s first meeting with Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne could have looked like. It’s a striking piece that certainly captures the otherworldly aspect of the Green Lanterns, and it looks like the scene could have made for an exciting cliffhanger moment if the sequels hadn’t been cancelled. Many fans have latched onto John Stewart's exclusion from the Snyder Cut and called for the original closing scene’s restoration. A greater online movement to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse has also formed in the months since Justice League’s second release. While the original petition to get Snyder’s original vision completed and released ended up being a success, there’s very little chance any more work will be done on the director’s version of the DCEU. Snyder himself has said that there’s almost no chance of him returning to the franchise.

Fortunately for Green Lantern fans, a different version of John Stewart may be coming to live-action sometime soon. Stewart hasn’t yet been announced for the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern series, but that doesn’t mean he won’t appear. There’s also still a new Green Lantern feature film theoretically in development, though there’s been very little news about it lately. After the disappointment of Ryan Reynolds’ 2011 Hal Jordan movie, it makes sense for DC to be somewhat cautious about how and when to bring the Lanterns back to the big screen. But with luck, Green Lantern fans will have more than fan art to appreciate before too long.
