[Warning: Possible SPOILERS for Justice League Part One ahead]
Slowly but surely, rumors and hints about the forthcoming Justice League films are trickling out. Some of them, such as the Atlantean-Human war postulation, have a measure of credibility (or at least repetition) behind them. Others, like the rumors about certain cosmic menaces meddling in Earthly affairs, seem to link up with existing teasers.
The latest round of gossip suggests that Justice League Part One involves Steppenwolf retrieving three left-behind Mother Boxes. A new rumor suggests a connection between an ancient war and a very modern conflict between two of the DCEU’s mightiest nations.
Controversial superhero-scooper El Mayimbe on the Heroic Insider show (watch it above) reportedly uncovered details which support earlier speculation about Steppenwolf’s quest to recover the Mother Boxes – as seen in Batman V Superman's deleted “Communion” scene. Supposedly, the New Gods' supercomputers were left behind 30,000 years ago when Darkseid lost a battle with the combined forces of Humans, Atlanteans, and Amazonians. The next prospective piece of the puzzle posits that the fallout from the Darkseid war leads to ongoing tensions between Atlantis and Themyscira.
This report (by way of CBM) does jive with previous rumors about a conflict between Atlantis and the surface world informing the plots of Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Justice League Part One. The plot further thickens when it’s revealed that Black Canary’s ancestor was a member of the Earth coalition which drove Darkseid back all those millennia ago. Mayimbe also notes that Cyborg will be instrumental in uncovering the plot by Steppenwolf (and presumably Darkseid) to reacquire the Mother Boxes. Since his cyber-body was created thanks to one of these Apokoliptian supercomputers, this theory does hold some water. Last but certainly not least, it sounds like the Atlanteans and the Amazons each held onto one of the other two Apokoliptian supercomputers.
Like any ‘insider scoop,’ it’s important to season these reports with a grain or three of salt. That said, based on the consistencies of the rumors and how well they’re lining up, we could be getting a glimpse at the skeletal plot of the story arc which leads into the two-part Justice League event. The war with Atlantis was a major plotline in the Throne of Atlantis animated film, and if both the Atlanteans and the Amazons are hanging onto a Mother Box, it could fuel the conflict between their two peoples – either with one faction wishing to possess both devices or through fearing the other’s possession of such a powerful contraption.
If true, Black Canary’s heritage could play a major role in setting the historical context of Justice League and repairing the rift between Atlantis and Themyscira. The rumors also suggest Cyborg will play a major role in uncovering the coming onslaught, and could be a vital connection which will aid the League in their dealings with the Mother Boxes and the big bads seeking to possess them. We’ll see how valid these theories wind up as more details are released about Justice League Part One and Aquaman in the coming months.
