Superman’s greatest foe may be sitting out Justice League, according to a rumor that claims Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) has been cut from the film. Eisenberg made his debut as the head of Lexcorp last year in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to a mixed reception. While some liked his new take on the character, others were bothered by his interpretation of the DC villain. Still, he played a vital role in setting up the duel fans wanted to see, and possibly an even larger one in putting things in motion for the Justice League to be formed.
Lex was also the one who created Doomsday – the monster who killed Superman – in the DCEU and sent the call to Darkseid, his army of parademons, and their general Steppenwolf. Batman thereafter sent him away to Arkam Asylum for safe keeping – and though it appeared as though Lex would return for Justice League in some capacity, that might not end up being the case after all.
Batman on Film was asked during a fan Q&A about the role that Lex is scheduled to have in Justice League. Much to the dismay of those looking forward to more of Eisenberg’s portrayal, they will have to wait much longer if this rumor is in fact true. Take this with a grain of salt for the time being, but here is BoF‘s comment on the matter of Lex’s Justice League appearance:
He doesn’t have one. If he did prior to all the changes/reshoots, it was cut.
If this report is true, it may simply indicate how small of a role Lex had to begin with and is probably not a sign of Joss Whedon overhauling the film that Zack Snyder had created. Unless Lex was scheduled to break out of prison, any visit to him would likely be for expositional purposes only. Since he familiarized himself with the Genesis Chamber and all of the knowledge it possessed, he would be the guy to go to if the Justice League had any questions about their first enemy. Removing him from the film could simply be a product of making the movie tighter and finding a better way to explain Apokolips than a Lex exposition dump.
That said, Justice League is far from having a final cut of the film made. Whedon is still in post-production on the film, so a final cut doesn’t exist yet. If this was coming from a more reliable source, than it could have more weight to it, but there is simply no telling how accurate or not this rumor is right now. If it was a small part to begin with, it is possible Eisenberg had yet to even film his scene(s) and may yet wind up being part of the movie. There are equally sound reasons for Justice League to keep or cut Lex’s role, so we’ll have to just wait till November to know for certain.
