Zack Snyder confirms he cast John Stewart’s Green Lantern in his Justice League. Following the less-than lackluster reception of 2017’s Justice League and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, Warner Bros. gave Snyder $70 million to complete his 4-hour vision for HBO Max. Snyder’s Justice League has been praised as superior to its theatrical version thanks to things like better character development and epilogue scenes alluding to a cohesive and yearned to be restored SnyderVerse.

Since WB/DC Films have abandoned Snyder’s original plan, the director filmed a Knightmare sequence alluding to his film’s sequels. The scenes see Bruce Wayne/Batman's dream of a future where Darkseid conquers the Earth, Superman succumbs to the Anti-Life Equation, and the Dark Knight negotiates a truce with the Clown Prince of Crime. When Bruce awakes, he is visited by the Martian Manhunter, who says he’s here to help in the war to come and commends Bruce for uniting Earth’s defenders. Originally, Snyder wanted the latter scene to include the Green Lantern John Stewart but was told he couldn’t use the character due to WB’s plans to include him in their plan for the DC Extended Universe. Having already directed the scene over Zoom due to the coronavirus pandemic, Snyder almost quit Justice League before deciding to use Martian Manhunter.

In a Justice Con interview, Snyder was shown a piece of recently-released concept art by Jojo Aguilar (below) and asked about the “guy who wears a green suit.” Snyder confirmed that the art was modeled after Shakespearean actor Wayne T. Carr:

“JoJo did that based on the actor we used when we did the scene - a guy named Wayne T. Carr. He’s an amazing actor and an amazingly kind gentleman. I told him there’s a chance this doesn’t make it in the movie, we are shooting in my driveway. I’m not one hundred percent sure he thought it was real.”

Snyder went on to explain how he met Carr through Ray Fisher, who plays Cyborg in Justice League, a character whose arc was essentially cut from Joss Whedon’s version. Despite Carr not appearing in Snyder’s film, the director said the actor is nonetheless thrilled by how well it’s doing on HBO Max; when asked if we’d ever get to see the deleted Green Lantern footage (using a CGI suit), Snyder said he did not know. Given fan reaction to the above art, one thing is certain, Carr appears to be the embodiment of John. He looks more convincing, formidable, and comics-accurate than Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan, another iteration that almost appeared in the Snyder Cut.

Despite not getting to use some of the ring-wielding characters he wanted, Snyder’s Justice League did include a couple of Lantern Easter Eggs via a flashback/history lesson and Cyborg’s Knightmare vision. Had Snyder not left Justice League in 2017, there’s no telling what would’ve become of the Green Lantern Corps. With the SnyderVerse abandoned, Warner Media is working on a Green Lantern Corps TV show for HBO Max featuring John, the Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Guy Gardner. Regardless, it would’ve been great to see Carr play arguably the most-beloved Lantern in Justice League sequels.
