Warning: SPOILERS for Nightwing #100Following their latest Crisis, the Justice League is set to soon return amidst the new "Dawn of DC" relaunch. However, a recent meeting with Nightwing seems to imply that the team will be taking on a different mission in their newest era.

The landmark Nightwing #100 by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo sees Superman and Wonder Woman ask Dick Grayson to become the face of the Justice League on Earth. This leads Nightwing to reintroduce the Titans as the leading group of the planet's defenders. This announcement comes with a surprising hint at the future of the Justice League: it's no longer an Earth-based team.

Is the Justice League a Space-Based Team Now?

This announcement primarily comes following the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. The event kicked off with the Death of the Justice League, wherein all primary Justice League members except Black Adam were seemingly killed. In reality, they were sent to individual worlds by Pariah in a bid to repopulate the DC multiverse in all its former glory. This left the planet without some of its biggest defenders as Deathstroke amassed an army of DC's greatest villains. To fight off the supervillain army, a group of heroes assembled, primarily led by legacy heroes like Nightwing, Superman (Jonathan Kent) and Wonder Girl (Yara Flor). Nightwing in particular became indispensable in the battle, defeating Deathstroke after the villain attempted to corrupt him with the Darkness. Recuperating after the Crisis, Batman informs Nightwing that the Justice League disbanded until it could find a new purpose.

Though the particulars of this new purpose remain unclear, Superman and Wonder Woman's conversation with Nightwing seems to make one thing clear: the Justice League's future is no longer on Earth. With the Titans taking on a larger role as Earth's protectors in Blüdhaven, it's quite possible that the Justice League's new mission will see the team expand to a role of galactic protectors, focusing less on being a safety net for humanity than it has in the past. This new arrangement could see the Titans serving as essentially the Justice League of Earth, with heavy hitters like Superman and Wonder Woman taking on a universal presence.

When Will the Justice League Return?

Altering brightness settings on DC's "Dawn of DC" graphic reveals that this return is likely just around the corner, with the image announcing the Justice League's return as part of DC's 2023 slate. Though Wonder Woman says they want Nightwing to lead Earth's protectors specifically while the Justice League rethinks their mission, it would feel odd to install the Titans as a worldwide presence only months before the League returns to the spotlight. Setting the Justice League off-world would allow the Titans to shine in the spotlight without being overshadowed by many of their former mentors. Though the Justice League has never been a strictly Earth-only team, perhaps experiences like Superman's time on Warworld have shown the Trinity that, with the planet safe in the hands of heroes like Nightwing, they can finally feel free to do more on a galactic scale.
