For the past twenty-plus years, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have basically dominated the animated superhero market, from their TV shows – namely, Batman: The Animated Series – to their multitudinous animated movies. And despite the fact that the legendary Bruce Timm is stepping down from his role as supervising producer of the DC Universe Animated Movies, it looks like DC will continue to dominate that market for the foreseeable future.

After Superman Unbound, the next animated movie scheduled to be released is Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, an adaptation of the 2011 (Flash-centric) comic book crossover by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. Today, the first image, a release date, and a synopsis for the film have been released.

The comic book version of Flashpoint saw Flash awaken in an alternate reality where he had no powers and all the superheroes therein were unlike the ones from his timeline. It was sort of like DC’s version of The Age of Apocalypse.

From the cover of ‘Flashpoint’ #3 by Andy Kubert

Batman wasn’t Bruce Wayne – he was Thomas Wayne, a vengeful man who donned the cape and cowl after his son (Bruce) was murdered. Superman wasn’t raised by down-to-Earth midwesterners, he was raised in a government facility, which had transformed him into a very skinny, frail-looking goth.  Hal Jordan never became Green Lantern because Abin Sur was never killed. And Aquaman‘s Atlanteans and Wonder Woman‘s Amazons had been at war for years – a war that had flooded most of Europe and cost millions of lives in the process.

Ultimately, Flashpoint wasn’t particularly successful or beloved, as far as comic book crossovers go. At this point, it’s mostly noteworthy as the impetus – though it wasn’t initially designed as such – for DC’s The New 52, the most significant continuity reboot in all of comic book history (after Crisis on Infinite Earths, that is).

The DVD, Blu-ray, On Demand, and digital release for the animated adaptation of Flashpoint has been scheduled for July 30th, 2013, two months after Unbound. Here’s the first official image from the film:

Alas, if you were hoping that the artistic style of Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox would resemble Andy Kubert’s style – as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns emulated Frank Miller’s – you’re likely to be disappointed here. Frankly, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise; DC Universe Animated Movies rarely resemble their comic book counterparts (Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns being the standouts) and Kubert’s style would’ve been difficult to recreate via animation regardless of budget.

Finally, check out the synopsis below:

When time travel allows a past wrong to be righted for The Flash and his family, the ripples of the event prove disastrous as a fractured, alternate reality now exists where a Justice League never formed, and even Superman is nowhere to be found. Teaming with a grittier, more violent Dark Knight and Cyborg, Flash races to restore the continuity of his original timeline while this new world is ravaged by a fierce war between Wonder Woman’s Amazons and Aquaman’s Atlanteans. With breath taking action and an all-star voice cast, it’s a bold, emotional vision that will forever change the landscape of the DC Universe.

Though DC has a habit of concocting less than aesthetically pleasing titles for its animated movies – did people really need a “Batman” in front of The Dark Knight Returns to know that it was about the caped crusader? – Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox seems particularly clunky. Of course, brand recognition being what it is, the Justice League portion is totally understandable, but couldn’t the title have just been Justice League: Flashpoint?

So far, the confirmed cast for JL: TFP includes Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Bruce Wayne/Batman from the normal timeline, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Deathstroke the Terminator, Vanessa Marshall (Young Justice) as Wonder Woman, and Dana Delany (Superman: The Animated Series) as Lois Lane.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, On Demand, and digital platforms July 30th, 2013.
