The upcoming DC Extended Universe superhero adventure Justice League is given the 1980s style trailer treatment in a new fan video. About a year and 8 months after the release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC's ultimate gathering of its iconic superheroes, Justice League, is finally hitting theaters this week, bringing Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Superman (Henry Cavill) together on the big screen for the first time.
For some fans, the wait probably feels like forever, stretching back as far the late 1970s when Superman soared on the big screen for the first time with Christopher Reeve under the auspices of director Richard Donner; and the late 1980s when Michael Keaton donned the cape and cowl of Batman for the first time for helmer Tim Burton.
For some fans, their first exposure to Superman and Batman came not in movie theaters, but on VHS video cassette, back in the day when modern formats like DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K, and digital streaming were nothing but a pipe dream. As somewhat of a tribute to the long gone home video format, YouTube channel darc91 has put together a new video imagining an '80s style Justice League trailer that has a distinct VHS feel about it.
While the video opens with studio credits going to Universal (which is a big mistake, since all DC Films have long been the property of Warner Bros.), the minute-long clip has all the characteristics of a trailer you'd watch on VHS, from flickering frames (a frequent problem due to tracking issues common to most VCRs) to low-grade video quality.
However, those aren't the only things that give the Justice League trailer its throwback feel. The faux trailer is accompanied by the low-rumbling pipes of a voice-over artist a la the late, great Don LaFontaine (whose read on the words "In a world ..." made the phrase legendary), as well as retro title treatments introducing each member of the Justice League. The trailer is made complete with the classic Miami Vice TV theme song, arguably one of the most 80s tracks in existence.
Not surprisingly, the trailer – assembled from actual Justice League trailer footage - has a feel good vibe about it, perfectly reflecting the playfulness of the footage of the film that the production has released so far. It's always fun when fans give a retro spin to modern movie trailers, and like the '70s style Wonder Woman trailer that paid homage to the original TV series that a fan posted in April, this old-school take on Justice League will no doubt get viewers' toes tapping and bring a smile to their faces – even if they can't adjust the picture.
