Are the members of the Justice League friends, or just 'work' friends? Do they hang out with each other, or are they just birthday cake in the breakroom buddies? The JLA prides itself on being actual friends and within the group, there are several deeper relationships going back years.

While many heroes have cycled in and out of the League over the years, several friendships started there have remained and have grown stronger with time. While some seem like odd or off pairings, appearances can often be deceiving. The friendships they have formed in fighting side by side are strong, with a bond that can last a lifetime.

Hawkman And Atom

Hawkman flies with Atom on his shoulder in DC Comics

Ray Palmer and Carter Hall are two very different people; The Atom is a scientist studying the atomic world, while Hawkman is a Thangarian archaeologist specializing in the ancient world. They likely shouldn't be friends, but they are and have been respected colleagues for years.

In the Silver Age, they had a combined book and shared several adventures, teaming up on JLA outings as well, proving that their odd paring continues to thrive.

Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) And Flash (Wally West)

Kyle Rayner and Wally West in DC comics

At first, they didn't get along very well, with Wally being openly critical of Kyle, but they had much more in common than Wally wanted to admit. They were both two men taking over for revered heroes, Wally for Barry Allen and Kyle for Hal Jordan, and both had a lot to prove.

While Wally was an old hand at the hero business being Kid Flash alongside Barry, but Kyle was new to the whole scene and it showed. Wally having been friends with Hal felt Kyle wasn't living up to the former Lantern's reputation. Finally, Kyle took him aside and asked if they would carry on the tradition of Green Lantern and Flash being friends. Wally, taken aback and a bit ashamed, agreed.

Batman And John Constantine

Batman talking to Constantine in DC Comics

A dark detective street fighter being friends with a back alley magician might not seem the most fruitful relationship but it works. While Batman is not someone who likes to deal with magic and the occult, he can appreciate the dedication and drive Constantine has, and John the reasoning and logical skill Bruce has.

Batman and John Constantine, while one of the weirdest friendships in the JLA, do share a similar worldview, though Constantine's is probably darker, and they share a sense of humor. A dark sense of humor.

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) And Flash (Barry Allen)

Hal Jordan and Barry Allen together in DC Comics

Hal and Barry have been friends since the Silver Age. In the DC Universe, they were the two first revived heroes of the Silver Age, forming the basis for what would become the DC revival of heroes. They often guested in each other's books and Barry is shown going on double dates with Hal and Coral Ferris before he married Iris West. They were legitimately best friends.

Flash was usually a happy guy, one who enjoyed life, who enjoyed being a hero, and being the 'fastest man alive' while Hal found it a bit tougher keeping up the hero and the personal sides of his life. Hal liked Barry's energy and attitude, and how it seemed easier for him, and Barry like encouraging Hal to relax and enjoy himself. They made a good pair.

Green Arrow And Black Canary

Green Arrow and Black Canary in Injustice 2 Comics

Black Canary lost her beloved husband, Larry, and finding her planet too harsh and lonely, she moved to Earth One, and there she met Oliver Queen, a charming, passionate, and broke billionaire whose lust for life and crime-fighting intrigued and overwhelmed her. He made her forget her grief while she made him feel strong and gave him a purpose.

Through many ups and downs, Black Canary and Green Arrow have been couple goals. He's still the passionate hothead while she's still the compassionate and loving soul who can give can cool his temper and give him peace. They may drift, but they were made for one another.

Black Canary And Zatanna

Zatanna and Black Cannary embracing in DC Comics

A sorcerous who poses as a humble stage magician and a street fighter as friends make little sense. Black Canary has been through a lot and her more grounded view of the world and people contrasts well with Zatanna's lighter and brighter worldview.

The recent Paul Dini written adventure Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell, shows how well the team works together, with each having the other's back, Zatanna using her magic and charm with people, and Canary her wits and fighting skills to get them through.

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) And Green Arrow (Ollie Queen)

Hal and Jordan talking in DC Comics

While Green Lantern and Green Arrow wouldn't seem the type to get along, they became life-long friends when the liberal Ollie suggested the more conservative Hal take a trip across the country to get back in touch with the people of America. This journey changed them both.

Since then, while many things have changed for both heroes, their friendship remains strong. They have been through a lot together and the kinds of things they've seen forges bonds that will last.

Superman And Batman

They may have had their falling outs over the years, but these two iconic DC heroes have a lot of respect and admiration for each other, even if the trust is sometimes lacking. Batman and Superman respect the passion each other have for the mission, but not always the way they go about it.

While respect may be high, trust is not always there. That's why Batman carries a chunk of Kryptonite in a lead-lined pocket of his utility belt. While Batman respects Superman and will call on him if help is needed, he's forever suspicious of anyone with that much power.

Batman And Wonder Woman

Batman and Wonder Woman kissing in DC Comics

Batman and Wonder Woman have been friends for a long time, but seem an unlikely friendship pair; she is an Amazonian princess and he's the dark avenger of the night, yet it works. They each have mutual respect for each other's mission, passion, and moral code. Wonder Woman respects Batman's intellect and leadership, while Batman respects Wonder Woman's abilities, combat, and leadership skills.

There has been some serious flirting back and forth between the two, especially in the JLA cartoon, but not much seems to have come of it. They probably realize what a mismatched pair they would be, and value their friendship too much to jeopardize it.

Blue Beatle And Booster Gold

The bromance of the '80s and '90s! They were the comedy team that really became the backbone of the Justice League International, they were truly brothers of another mother. When Booster came from the future, desperate to prove himself, he met Ted Cord, a man who also was trying to prove himself against a legend.

One thing that bonded the two is that they were both smartasses, and loved goading authority, be it Batman or Maxwell Lord. They cooked up schemes together, planned pranks on Batman and Martian Manhunter together, and when Jaime Reyes took over, Booster stepped in to be a friend to someone who needed a friend.
