Warner Bros. is reportedly starting afresh on Justice League Dark and Doctor Strange writer Jon Spaihts is reportedly leading the charge. Warner Bros. Pictures has set several DC Extended Universe movie release dates now, but their plans for the franchise as a whole are seemingly rather fluid right now. Most recently, the studio was reported to be considering an Elseworlds-style brand for non-DCEU movies, too. One project that will remain part of the DCEU until further notice is Justice League Dark, a personal and small story that introduces some rather unique characters from DC's lore.
Justice League Dark has yet to get off the ground, however, despite both Guillermo Del Toro and Doug Liman having been involved in its development before stepping down (for scheduling reasons, in both cases, it seems). Meetings with other directors has not gone as planned, apparently, and now the Justice League Dark script is being reworked - with Spaihts apparently the writer responsible for shaping the latest iteration of the project.
That Hashtag Show is reporting that Spaihts has been tapped to write the newest script draft of Justice League Dark. The changes that he will make are unknown, but he has routinely shown an ability to ground out of this world concepts. Outside of his recent venture into the superhero genre with Doctor Strange, he also served as a writer on the sci-fi film Passengers and wrote the Alien: Engineers script that was eventually re-imagined into Prometheus.
Spaihts' experience in writing blockbuster films should serve Justice League Dark well. It will not be easy bringing Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Etrigan the Demon, Zatanna, and Deadman to life on the big screen, but there is reason to believe that Spaihts can help make it happen. If he can, then future meetings WB has with directors should go much smoother than the last rounds did. IT's Andres Muschietti and filmmaker Damián Szifron were reportedly considered to direct, but it appears that neither one ultimately closed a deal for the film.
Some of the difficulties with Justice League Dark could be the outcome of the DCEU and its unfixed future. With a new DC movie banner possibly launching and kicking off with a Joker origin story in the year ahead, it remains all the less clear what the future holds for Justice League Dark. Fingers crossed, we will have a more definitive update on the matter sometime before this year draws to a close in four months.
UPDATE: It's been reported that the draft is a few months old and that Spaihts has already moved on to other projects.
?Yesterday's rumor about Jon Spaihts/Justice League Dark wasn't accurate. He did a draft MONTHS ago already moved onto other projects. RT?
