Warning: contains spoilers for Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1!

Two central members of Justice League Dark Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing - are Earth’s last hope in DC’s Future State. In Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1, a mysterious force is causing the universe to come undone, and only Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing can stop it. The story, written by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad with art by Jen Bartel, is in stores now.

When DC relaunched the Justice League family of titles during the No Justice event, Wonder Woman was placed on the supernatural-tinged Justice League Dark. The original Justice League Dark had been a success for DC during the New 52 era, bringing many former Vertigo characters back to the DC Universe. The new version saw Wonder Woman join original Justice League Dark stalwarts Zatanna and Swamp Thing in a new incarnation of the team. Detective Chimp and Man-Bat signed on as well. During her time with the team, Wonder Woman forged an unlikely friendship with Swamp Thing, and that friendship lasts until the end of time, as seen in this issue.

A mysterious power, called “The Undoing,” is causing reality to unravel. Swamp Thing, as a representative of the Green, which connects all plant life on Earth, is slowly dying due to the effects of the Undoing. Wonder Woman, recognizing that Swamp Thing’s survival is crucial to the Earth’s survival, attempts to save him while the rest of the universe burns. No one seems interested in stopping the Undoing; Darkseid is more interested in fighting Superman, and as the two titans come to Earth in battle, Swamp Thing desperately tries to hold on for life, but ultimately slips away while a tearful Wonder Woman looks on.

As with most Future State titles, there is a great deal of mystery surrounding what is going on. The first, and most obvious question is: who is behind these attacks on the universe? At the end of Dark Nights Death Metal, the Hands, mysterious beings from beyond the Multiverse, were ready to destroy our universe, but Wonder Woman convinced them otherwise. Could this be the work of the Hands, or something else altogether? A powerful entity known as the Empty Hand threatened to destroy the Multiverse, and his threat is still very real.

Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing’s friendship in Justice League Dark was one of the highlights of the book. It was an odd-couple pairing but it worked, and has lasted until the end of the universe. As Swamp Thing passes away, he offers Wonder Woman a mysterious gift - one which may mean DC's darkest team is also the one to save it from its final threat in Future State.
