Justice League's box office haul continues to disappoint as the superhero team-up movie is no longer expected to top Man of Steel's global gross. Warner Bros. launched their unofficially titled DC Extended Universe with Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 - a follow-up to the filmmaker's 2013 movie, Man of Steel - and continued expanding the newly-formed shared universe with David Ayer's Suicide Squad and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, but everything has been leading up to the release of Justice League.
Justice League unites the world's finest heroes - Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), as well as Superman (Henry Cavill) - for an ultimate showdown with the villainous Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, who've returned to Earth after thousands of years to reclaim their lost Mother Boxes and to terraform the planet into a New Apokolips. While the movie had its ups and downs, its critical and commercial performance continues to baffle - and now it's not expected to top the first film in the then-unconnected universe, Man of Steel.
Forbes reports that Justice League isn't expected to top Man of Steel's worldwide gross of $668 million, of which $291 million was earned domestically, thus making the film the lowest-grossing installment in the DCEU. Justice League currently sits at $567 million worldwide (box office numbers have been updated to reflect current estimates). The blockbuster movie is earning the vast majority of its money from overseas markets, namely China, where it's already grossed over $84 million. Unfortunately, Justice League's overall box office haul is slowing down, and while it may reach Man of Steel's 2013 numbers, it's not expected to cross that fateful mark.
As it stands, Batman V Superman is the highest-grossing DCEU movie, having earned $873.3 million worldwide, with Wonder Woman coming in a close second with $821.8 million (of which half its gross was earned domestically), thus making the 2017 film the highest-grossing superhero origin story of all-time. Suicide Squad, though a critical disaster for the studio, still managed to gross an astronomical $745.6 million globally (without China), and has since spawned a sequel and multiple spinoffs that are currently in the works. When all is said and done, though, it seems even those movies will have outgrossed the first live-action Justice League film.
Justice League is only in its third weekend of release, but with the holiday season ramping up and Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi around the corner, general interest in the superhero movie continues to wane. However, it seems that Justice League may at least cross the much-needed $600 million mark, thus making the film somewhat profitable for the studio - but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
