The epilogue of Zack Snyder’s Justice League includes a Knightmare scene where Batman leads a ragtag team of characters on an important but mysterious mission, but where were they going? It’s one of the film’s more notable additions to the theatrical cut – especially considering how important the Knightmare was meant to be for the cancelled Justice League 2. However, the ending also leaves a lot of questions unanswered that the planned follow-up would've addressed.

The Knightmare was conceived as a post-apocalyptic future where Darkseid was victorious in his conquest of Earth. The story would have seen him kill Lois Lane, thereby making Superman susceptible to Darkseid’s control via the Anti-Life Equation. Superman then assisted in decimating the planet, turning it into a lifeless wasteland ruled by his own brutal regime where any who opposed him were quickly put down. Batman led an insurgency against Superman’s regime, whose mission was to undo the damage done to Earth by the Kryptonian and Darkseid.

The Snyder Cut shows Batman leading a small strike team of that insurgency – Batman, Mera, Cyborg, Flash, Deathstroke, and Joker – going on an important mission to an undisclosed location. When Mera mentions her desire to face Superman head-on, Bruce reminds her that they have to “stick to the plan,” if they want to “make this right.” Given that Flash travels back through time from the Knightmare in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, it seems most likely that the team’s mission is tied to the Cosmic Treadmill.

Snyder himself has said that his planned Justice League sequels would have seen Flash and Cyborg construct the Cosmic Treadmill in the Knightmare so that Barry could travel back and prevent the apocalypse from ever happening. Since Batman says to Mera that their mission will make right the world they’re in, time travel seems like the only reasonable answer. Depending on when the epilogue scene takes place in the Knightmare, however, there could be a few places Batman’s team is headed.

One of the most obvious possibilities, especially since Cyborg is involved in the creation of the Cosmic Treadmill, is S.T.A.R. Labs. However, given Batman’s line about them going somewhere Superman wouldn’t expect, that may be less likely. If work has already been done on the Cosmic Treadmill, the team might be heading to the old Batcave. That would put Flash in the right geographical location to reach Bruce in Batman v. Superman when he travels back through time, and it certainly isn’t somewhere Superman would expect to find the insurgents – hiding in plain sight. That theory also has issues, however, as the landscape surrounding the team in the Knightmare scene looks nothing like Gotham. Unfortunately, the exact details of the Knightmare aren’t all revealed in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and with no future plans for that version of the DCEU, they’ll continue to remain a mystery.
