The fate of Batman seems to have changed in the Knightmare timeline in Zack Snyder's Justice League. One of the biggest elements that DCEU fans have been following for years is the tease of a horrific future in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As Ben Affleck got introduced as the latest incarnation of the Caped Crusader, Snyder set some key things into motion, teasing what would be in store for the Justice League. During the film's course, Bruce dreams of a future where Superman is now ruling the planet through the influence of Darkseid as well as the forces of Apokolips.

While Batman leads an insurgence army, it ends up not being enough for them to stop the corrupted Superman. In an unforgettable scene after Batman is defeated by his regime, Bruce witnesses the death of several of his comrades. As Superman finishes killing them with his heat vision, he unmasks Batman and focuses just on him. In a matter of seconds, Clark kills Bruce right as Bruce jerks awake from his "nightmare." As grim as that future looked, a bit of hope comes to Bruce's aid when suddenly The Flash emerges to warn him about Superman and how Lois Lane is "the key."

Despite Batman having been murdered at the hands of Superman in the future, it seems Bruce's story in the Knightmare isn't actually over yet. With the Snyder Cut of Justice League coming out in roughly a month, the director has revealed another tease of the Knightmare scenario. Through his Vero page, Snyder revealed a new still photo with Affleck back Batman's Knightmare trenchcoat. But the biggest mystery here is where this new scene is taking place during the Knightmare storyline. With Jared Leto's Joker becoming a part of the Snyder Cut, it has been confirmed that he helps with the creation of Flash's cosmic treadmill.

The Flash's cameo in Batman v Superman

There are a few possible ways to explain this tease, considering Batman was killed in Batman v Superman's Knightmare scene. The first is that the new image might be from prior to Batman's gruesome death. It's possible this could be earlier on in the Knightmare story. Other than showing up briefly in Batman v Superman, not much has been revealed so far about Barry's additional role in this timeline besides going back in the past to warn Bruce of the future. The second possibility is this image is actually is from an altered Knightmare reality. Since Bruce not only dreamed of his death but was warned by Flash about the future, Bruce's actions will surely be impacted by this new knowledge, resulting in a different future where Batman actually doesn't get killed by Superman. It would be a way to reflect on Barry's actions during Batman v Superman as it twists things around for the bigger arc in Justice League.

Given the nature of Flash's time travel shenanigans, something will definitely have to be different in the Knightmare future when the Snyder Cut drops on HBO Max. Since Bruce both literally saw and heard of the grim future that is coming, it's highly likely that Batman has already begun trying to counteract it in the present. It would quite frankly be out of character for Bruce to possessing this kind of information and not do anything to prevent the Knightmare future from happening. So at the very least, if he can save himself from getting killed by Superman, that is a big advantage for the heroes. As the Snyder Cut of Justice League gets closer to be released, answers will soon be revealed about Batman's Knightmare fate.
