HBO Max’s Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That…, premieres on December 9, kicking off the series’ relatively short first season before its 2022 finale episode release date. Sex and the City is now a franchise of its own accord, originally airing on HBO for six celebrated seasons from 1998 to 2004 with an average of 16 episodes per season. The series then received two film sequels in 2008 and 2010, with HBO Max’s And Just Like That… picking up a little over a decade later.

And Just Like That… brings back three of the four main characters from Sex and the City, with Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda back in New York City while Kim Cattrall’s Samantha has been written out in London. Along with the core friends, old flames and associates like Mr. Big, Aidan, Steve, Harry, Anthony, and the late Willie Garson’s Stanford will all make triumphant returns in the series. The reboot is being promoted as a new chapter of Sex and the City, implying the new show will see plenty of changes and twists in the lives, friendships, and romances of the beloved characters.

As another of HBO Max’s original series reboots of iconic shows, And Just Like That… is following suit with a short first season as they test the waters for the characters’ returns. HBO Max has confirmed that And Just Like That… will have 10 episodes in its first season. The first two episodes premiere on HBO Max on December 9, with the remaining eight episodes debuting weekly thereafter. The season 1 finale episode of Sex and the City’s revival will release to stream on HBO Max on Thursday, February 3, 2022.

At 10 episodes, And Just Like That… already has more installments than Sex and the City season 5, which only had 8 episodes. The revival series will not be following the split-season structure of recent HBO Max reboots like Gossip Girl, which separated its 12 episodes into parts 1 and 2. Considering Sex and the City isn’t the type of series that needs to end on a momentous event, it’s possible the success of the revival’s first season will warrant more installments. With only ten episodes, the new season is relatively short, with plenty more relationships, friendships, and life events still in store for Sex and the City’s Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte.

Additionally, And Just Like That… is introducing plenty of new characters along with returning faces to aide the women in their upcoming chapter. With only ten episodes, audiences will be eager to spend more time with the new characters like Nicole Ari Parker’s Lisa, who has been described as the group’s Samantha replacement. If And Just Like That...’s first season is a hit by its February 3 finale, HBO Max renewing it for a second season seems more than likely. If so, it’s possible the creators could convince Kim Cattrall to reprise her fan-favorite role as Samantha.
