Jurassic Park III may have been a success back in 2001, but the sequel felt like a hollow retread of the previous entries, which is best remembered today for Alan Grant's (Sam Neill) infamous "Alan!" dream. Following this, development on a fourth movie would prove difficult. It couldn't just be another movie where people get stranded on a dinosaur infested island, but nobody could crack an interesting concept.
During this period, screenwriter John Sayles (Alligator) wrote a memorably bonkers Jurassic Park IV script that involved a mercenary training a pack of human/dinosaur hybrids to carry out assassinations. Colin Trevorrow would eventually be hired to helm Jurassic World, which featured the ingeniously simple premise of having a dinosaur park be up and functioning. In a very meta-commentary, audiences are jaded of seeing dinosaurs, so a new hybrid attraction is introduced which soon breaks out and starts snacking on visitors.
Jurassic World's critical response was mixed but its box-office most assuredly was not, as it grossed over $1.6 billion. The movie also cemented the stardom of Chris Pratt (Guardians Of The Galaxy), who plays Owen Grady, an ex-military character hired to be the "alpha" to a pack of trained velociraptors. Many of the movie's trailers and posters revolved around this plot point, including the sequence where Grady races on his bike alongside the raptors.
There were four members of Jurassic World's velociraptor Pack in total, with the most famous being Blue, who is the "beta" of the team. Blue was the first raptor created for the new park and is shown to be the most intelligent and loyal. She also earned her name due to her distinct blue scales. Blue's sisters were named after the NATO phonetic alphabet, however. Delta has a teal color and most famously chomps down on human villain Vic Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio, Daredevil) in the finale. Echo has a scar from challenging Blue for dominance when they were young, while Charlie is the youngest and meets her end via a rocket launcher.
The raptor squad was one of the more controversial elements of Jurassic World, as fans couldn't understand the logic of "domestic" raptors. Still, the movie did a good job of portraying them as dangerous and unpredictable, and they weren't exactly cuddly pets. Blue has since become a fan favorite too, being the only survivor of her pack and having returned for a bigger role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. She'll undoubtedly come back for 2021's Jurassic World 3 too, which promises to be an epic conclusion to the saga.
