Owen Grady was shown riding a horse in the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer. In a world populated by hundreds of unique creatures from the Jurassic era, a horse is a particularly bland choice for a mount for Chris Pratt’s character. It would have made sense for him to pick a dinosaur instead, which would hold up better if he gets caught in combat with a raptor or a different carnivorous creature.

The Jurassic World: Dominion trailer provided a deep preview of how things have changed since the franchise’s last installment. The ending of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened the door for humans and genetically-engineered dinosaurs to share the Earth. Set four years after Fallen Kingdom, Dominion explores what the Earth is like now that humanity has spent some time with dinosaurs living amongst them. Footage in the trailer for the upcoming movie showed that many humans still haven’t accepted the change, and also provided a glimpse at some of these dinosaurs in their new ecosystems, with others invading human cities.

Early in the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer, Owen could be spotting chasing a pack of Parasaurolophus (also known as parasaurs) on horseback through an open area somewhere in the wild. Looking at the state of the planet in Dominion, it would feel like a natural progression for the franchise to show its protagonist riding a dinosaur of some kind into battle. Based on his background as an animal behaviorist who formed a bond with a raptor and kept dinosaurs on his ranch, it would be fitting for Owen to experience a moment like this in the movie. In fact, it could be that the scene with Owen on the horse is actually setup for something like this to happen.

In fact, his intent to ride a dinosaur may explain why Owen is chasing the parasaurs in the first place. It’s entirely possible that he intends to tame a member of the herd. At the 0:16 mark in the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer, he was shown interacting with a parasaur that had a rope around its neck. This could very well be the dinosaur that Pratt’s character will ride. That could work, especially since the parasaur is a docile herbivore species that could be more susceptible to being ridden by a human than a raptor or another vicious beast. Its behavior makes it ill-suited for combat, but its size and speed could make it incredibly useful.

All things considered, the horse is likely just a temporary mount for Owen in Jurassic World: Dominion and a stepping stone toward him getting an actual dinosaur to ride. Not moving in this direction would be a hugged missed opportunity to deliver some exciting action sequences. Judging by how fast the parasaurs were able to run in the trailer, the creature certainly has the potential to be a reliable ally and an interesting companion to Owen for his next Jurassic World adventure.
