In response to a tweet complaining about the use of the iconic T-Rex in Jurassic World Dominion, director Colin Trevorrow explains some of the reasoning behind the movie's story decisions. Jurassic World Dominion features a four-year time jump from the previous installment. The world has since become overrun by dinosaurs, leaving heroes Claire Dearing and Owen Grady in a precarious position as they attempt to keep Maisie Lockwood safe. Jurassic World Dominion also features the grand returns of franchise veterans Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, and Ian Malcom. The talented cast includes the likes of Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, DeWanda Wise, and Isabella Sermon.
Across the span of the Jurassic films, the T-Rex has become an iconic part of the brand, from factoring into the plot to also being featured in the logo. However, one of the criticisms lobbed at Jurassic World Dominion is that it has left the infamous dinosaur looking vastly underwhelming. The new movie pits the T-Rex against the imposing Gigantosaurus, who has been hyped as one of the franchise's biggest dinosaurs yet. While the Gigantosaurus makes for a formidable villain, some have complained about how, as a result, it has de-powered the T-Rex.
A fan recently reached out to Trevorrow on social media to criticize how Jurassic World Dominion treats the T-Rex. In his own post, he responds by explaining why the T-rex might now pale beside the Gigantosaurus. It actually has to do with her own age, and the lifespan of the prehistoric creature. As mentioned, the Tyrannosaurus Rex has no doubt become the most recognizable dinosaur within the entire Jurassic franchise, not only being seen on the official logo used for all installments but also being a major part of the climactic finale in the original 1993 film. Despite this, ever since the first Jurassic World movie, many other fans have been vocal about the T-Rex feeling sidelined. It appears only briefly at the end of the 2015 film and had similar cameo appearances in the sequel. With such prior significance, audiences were clearly upset when she was faced with a similar fate in the conclusion to the sequel trilogy.
In this explanation from Trevorrow himself, it is nice to receive some kind of reasoning behind the T-Rex being so heavily sidelined in Jurassic World Dominion. In fact, one could say Trevorrow has made her appear somehow stronger with the new information about her age. While future films are looking scarce but not out of the question for Jurassic World, this distaste from fans could make the creators include the iconic dinosaur on a much larger level should more stories be told in this world. Either way, Jurassic World Dominion has ruffled some feathers, but hopefully Trevorrow's explanation can make up for some of the perceived insult.
