The overlong and unnecessary detour to Malta in Jurassic World Dominion proves that the proposed Fast & Furious franchise crossover would be a terrible idea. On the face of it, a crossover between the Fast & Furious and Jurassic World franchises seems like a good idea. The Fast & Furious franchise has gradually grown more ludicrous and far-fetched with each new sequel, and an eventual Fast & Furious time-travel plot looks more likely as the series goes on.

The Jurassic World franchise grew from a 2015 movie that attempted to recreate Jurassic Park’s disaster horror on a larger scale into a stranger, more ambitious 2018 sequel that ended up unleashing dinosaurs upon the human world. By now, both series take place in bizarre, cartoony heightened realities, making the crossover seem like a clever option. However, Jurassic World Dominion’s ill-considered Malta sequence proved that the franchise can’t mash up its appeal with the unique tone of the Fast & Furious movies.

The Malta sequence sees Jurassic World’s heroes meet with a CIA asset to investigate a dinosaur black market in their search of a human clone. As that synopsis implies, the scene owes less to the original Jurassic Park movies and more to Indiana Jones and James Bond, although by the end of the sequence, another inspiration becomes more obvious. When Jurassic World Dominion’s un-killable hero, Owen Grady, drives a speeding motorcycle into a plane to avoid a raptor that is chasing him off a pier, it becomes blatantly obvious that Jurassic World Dominion is trying to copy the Fast & Furious series — and failing. Absurdly over-the-top and devoid of any meaningful stakes, Jurassic World Dominion’s Malta detour is arguably the worst part of the whole movie, and certainly its most nonsensical.

The Malta sequence is proof enough that a crossover between Jurassic World and Fast & Furious should never happen because the absurd antics of Dom and company only make sense in a world where other goofy, unrealistic events aren’t commonplace. Much like it sounds fun to make a movie about witches fighting aliens or ghosts traveling through time, the idea of mixing the already-escapist stunts of the Fast & Furious franchise with the dinosaur-driven action of Jurassic World Dominion seems to be a potentially fun mix. However, while viewers can swallow the idea of a car driving through one skyscraper and into another or dinosaurs being let loose in a modern city, both of these events happening at once results in a live-action cartoon with no connection to recognizable reality.

There are virtually no stakes to the action of Jurassic World Dominion since Owen’s ability to drive a motorcycle onto a plane as it takes off renders the threat of dinosaurs meaningless. Dinosaurs aren’t scary if the people they are pursuing can’t be killed, and the stars of the Fast & Furious franchise aren’t interesting unless they are nigh-on indestructible and thus can achieve stunts that would kill any normal human. The Fast & Furious and Jurassic World franchises just don’t fit tonally, something that the Malta sequence of Jurassic World Dominion proves throughout its extensive runtime.
