Unlike previous Jurassic Park movies that all took place primarily on islands, Jurassic World Dominion will focus on dinosaurs being loose on the mainland - but how did the creatures finally enter the real world? Set to premiere on June 10, 2022, Jurassic World Dominion will take place four years after the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Since the second Jurassic World movie ended with many dinosaurs being released into the wild, Jurassic World Dominion will explore the problems humans face as they have to learn to survive alongside dinosaurs.

The end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom explains how dinosaurs were originally set free on the mainland. Due to an impending volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar, many different dinosaur species were rescued and brought to a private estate in Northern California. However, this turned out to be a plot to sell the dinosaurs to international companies at an auction. Although the protagonists managed to stop the auction, a gas leak threatened to kill all of the dinosaurs that were still trapped in the estate. To save them, Maisie, a young girl who had just discovered that she was a genetic clone like the dinosaurs, released them into the wild.

While this explains how the dinosaurs initially escaped, it is unclear why there are so many dinosaurs loose in Jurassic World Dominion. In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, mercenaries managed to rescue a limited number of dinosaurs from Isla Nublar. Of these, many were sold at auction and shipped away before Maisie released the rest into the wild. This should mean that there are very few dinosaurs free on the mainland, and it would be impossible for there to be any new species. However, the recent Jurassic World Dominion trailer revealed that there will be many dinosaurs free all around the world, and there will be new species, such as the Atrociraptor and Pyroraptor. There are two possible explanations for this rapid spread of dinosaurs: breeding and escaping.

Jurassic World Dominion Owen Grady Pets Dinosaur

The original Jurassic Park movie established the idea that Jurassic Park’s scientists tried to prevent the dinosaurs from breeding by ensuring that all of them were female during their embryonic development. However, even in Jurassic Park, this method proved unsuccessful due to scientists using frog DNA to fill the gaps in dinosaur DNA. Since some West African frogs can change their sex, the dinosaurs were able to do the same and begin breeding. Unless scientists fixed this problem before Jurassic World Dominion, the dinosaurs on the mainland could breed this way. Without any natural predators and plenty of prey, dinosaur populations would then be able to grow rapidly. Some species with shorter lifespans would even potentially be able to reach adulthood within the four years between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion.

Additionally, dinosaurs could quickly spread around the world by escaping from those who bought them at the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. During the auction, global companies bought dinosaurs and immediately sent them back to their home countries. As Jurassic World proved with the velociraptors, though, dinosaurs will inevitably escape, unleashing them upon different regions of the world. As for the new species of dinosaurs, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom also showed buyers leaving the auction with a briefcase full of fertilized dinosaur embryos. With these, some groups may begin growing more dinosaurs, hoping to use them for combat or defense against the dinosaurs already loose. However, these would only make the situation worse by adding more dinosaurs with new, dangerous abilities to the environment. In this way, human error combined with Jurassic Park’s classic theme of “life will find a way” explains how dinosaurs were able to grow and spread throughout the world in Jurassic World Dominion.
