Universal Pictures has trademarked a new video game titled Jurassic World Aftermath, hinting at a revival of a project fans believed to have been scrapped. In 2016, a Jurassic World survival game was in development by Perfect World Entertainment and was speculated to take place immediately after the events in the first Jurassic World film. The aptly named Jurassic World Survivor was short-lived, however, as development stopped before the game was finished.

In 2018, however, Frontier Developments released Jurassic World Evolution, a business simulation in which players build their own dinosaur park. Considered “an awesome dinosaur tycoon” by some, the game featured Jeff Goldblum, Bryce Dallas Howard, and B. D. Wong - all of whom reprised their Jurassic Park film roles and lent their voices to the game. In addition, Jurassic World Evolution returned to Jurassic Park through DLC that brought back certain features nostalgic fans would recognize from the original films. Fans who were on the fence about the game but were curious enough to try it could have also acquired it for free with an Xbox Live Gold subscription in late November 2019.

According to Jurassic Outpost, Universal Pictures recently filed a trademark application for Jurassic World Aftermath with the application’s description being “strikingly similar to the trademark for Survivor.” The trademark application’s goods and services section includes the following information: “Recorded interactive multi-media software for playing games; downloadable interactive multi-media software for playing games; downloadable software in the nature of a mobile application for playing games and accessing entertainment content for use with computers, portable handheld digital electronic communication devices, mobile devices, wired and wireless communication devices, and video game consoles…”

Further speculation assumes Jurassic World Aftermath is picking up where Jurassic World Survivor’s development left off, especially considering the original studio that had been working on Jurassic World Survivor is no longer in business. Little else is known about Jurassic World Aftermath, including which studio will be developing the game, assuming it’s going to be made at all. It’s also possible that this game is completely different from the cancelled 2016 title, as any information other than what is explicitly stated in the trademark application is pure speculation at this time.

The Jurassic Park and World franchises have been a Universal Studios staple since the original Jurassic Park film in 1993. The series have spawned theme parks, video games, and a plethora of other entertainment mediums, including toys and clothing lines. Fans of the dinosaur films have been disappointed countless times with the cancellation of Jurassic-themed video games, and they are due for the successful launch of one that allows them to take control of their character in an RPG, open world environment where they can put their survival skills to the ultimate test: against dinosaurs.
