According to Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow, Steven Spielberg got emotional over the returns of original Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern. Once planned to arrive last summer, the third and likely final installment in the Jurassic World series will roll out in theaters in June 2022. The new movie will pick up years after 2018's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which ended with the intriguing hook that dinosaurs are now running amuck among humans. By the time Dominion begins, the prehistoric creatures will have already integrated themselves into society, which doesn't bode well for the human population of the world.

Jurassic World: Dominion will include numerous familiar faces from the recent trilogy, including leading stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. However, fans are likely more excited to hear it will feature the characters who started it all. Jurassic Park's central trio of Alan Grant (Neill), Ian Malcolm (Goldblum), and Ellie Sattler (Dern) have all returned for Jurassic World 3. Even better, they'll all have substantial roles far bigger than Goldblum's quick Fallen Kingdom cameo.

Seeing the original Jurassic Park trio on screen together again will be emotional enough for audiences, but it held some extra weight for the man who directed them in the first place. Speaking to EmpireDominion director Colin Trevorrow revealed Steven Spielberg's reaction to seeing Neill, Dern, and Goldblum on set once again. To pay tribute to the Jurassic Park director, Trevorrow sent Spielberg a picture of the stars during their first scene, and it touched him greatly. Trevorrow said:

“The moment everybody shows up for the first time together, they’re all packed into a Jeep. And I took a picture of it and I sent it to Steven [Spielberg]. He got very emotional. I don’t think even he was prepared for how moving it would be to see all of those characters that he loves, and people that he loves, looking incredible and on an adventure together.”

Jurassic Park Cast

The Jurassic movies moved beyond Spielberg even before Trevorrow got his hands on them for Jurassic World, but as the director of the 1993 classic, Spielberg will be forever tied to this franchise. It was sweet of Trevorrow to keep him in the loop while making Jurassic World: Dominionespecially when it came to the characters Spielberg brought to life. Trevorrow's picture likely showed Spielberg just how enduring his work remains, which must have been special.

Fans have been gradually seeing more of Jurassic World: Dominion through images and a prologue trailer, but little has been revealed of Neill, Dern, and Goldblum. It seems likely that Trevorrow is trying to keep that until closer to the movie, or is perhaps saving it for the official trailer. Could there possibly be any better trailer shot than the Jurassic Park characters riding together in a Jeep? Hearing Spielberg's reaction to the cast's return just heightens the excitement, and hopefully it won't be long until fans get to see them back together again too.
