Jurassic World: Dominion is temporarily shutting down production due to the global pandemic stemming from the coronavirus. The third film in the Jurassic World franchise has been filming since February, but now it along with other Universal Pictures projects have announced they are halting production.

This is by no means the first impact the coronavirus has had on the entertainment industry, as several upcoming movies have delayed their releases while other films currently in production have suspended temporarily. In fact, the only facet of the entertainment industry looking to benefit from quarantines and widespread social distancing are streaming services. Disney+, for example, is acting quick by releasing Frozen 2 three months early, looking to capitalize on children now stuck at home amid school closures. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is also being released early on digital, but for those more interested in seeing new movies, that wait just got longer.

With concern over the coronavirus and the ways in which large gatherings of people can help it spread, Universal Pictures has announced that production on Jurassic World: Dominion, Flint Stong, and a new Billy Eichner comedy produced by Judd Apatow will all be halted temporarily. You can read Universal's official statement (via Deadline) below:

"Universal Pictures’ live-action feature productions will ramp down and go on hiatus beginning this weekend. The studio continues to monitor the situation closely and will make a determination on when to restart production in the coming weeks."

Jurassic World: Dominion was only recently revealed as the official title for the upcoming installment. It hints at how following the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the dinosaurs are now free to roam the world. Colin Trevorrow is returning as director as are Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, but also original Jurassic Park actors Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. Previously, all three actors have appeared in one sequel or another, but Jurassic Park: Dominion marks the first film in where the stars of both the original and current franchise will appear together.

As for how long production will remain halted on Jurassic World: Dominion, that's still unknown. Universal's statement suggests they don't yet have an exact date for when production will resume and it's probably for the best to just wait and see. For the moment, Universal isn't likely to move Jurassic World: Dominion off its June 2021 release date, but if production stays stopped for too long and as more movies reschedule their releases, it's definitely a possibility.
