New details for Jurassic World Dominion's pilot character Kayla arrive from star DeWanda Wise along with a new image from the upcoming threequel. The She's Gotta Have It alum is one of a number of Jurassic Park franchise newcomers joining the new film alongside Mamoudou Athie, Scott haze, Dichen Lachman and Campbell Scott, though the latter is picking up the role of Biosyn Genetics CEO Dr. Lewis Dodgson from the original Jurassic Park, in which he was played by Cameron Thor. The newcomers are joined by franchise vets Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Daniella Pineda, Isabella Sermon, Justice Smith, Omar Sy and BD Wong.

Jurassic World Dominion picks up four years after the events of its predecessor in which Isla Nublar was destroyed by a volcano and a large collection of dinosaurs were released out into the world by the young clone Maisie Lockwood. Humans are now forced to adjust to a world living and hunting alongside dinosaurs, with familiar faces reuniting to find a way to restore humanity to their status as the apex predator of the planet before it's too late. Following a multitude of pandemic-related delays, Jurassic World: Dominion is gearing up to hit theaters this summer.

While speaking with Empire for their newest issue, star DeWanda Wise shared Jurassic World Dominion details for her new pilot character, Kayla. In addition to expressing her excitement for breaking into the big-budget world of filmmaking, Wise revealed her character is "fresh out of the Air Force" and teases she is flying a certain kind of cargo at the start of the movie. See what Wise shared and the new image of her character below:

“There’s nothing like being dropped into a space to go, like, ‘Got it. I know how to walk now’. This is Kayla’s world. She’s fresh out of the Air Force and her main thing is flying cargo: mostly dinosaur stuff, but it could be anything. If you are even a little bit of an animal lover, even a smidge, it’s just remarkable. I was shown the Lystrosaurus early and named him Leonard. I would like to take him home. It’s honestly wildly overwhelming, how much affection you can feel for this thing that you know logically is not real.”

DeWanda Wise in Jurassic World Dominion

The reveal of Wise's pilot character as a military veteran makes her the latest of the Jurassic World characters to have that background. Though much of his past has been underexplored in the films, it was mentioned in the original sequel that Chris Pratt's Owen Grady had served in the U.S. Navy before being employed by Jurassic World as their on-site animal behaviorist who primarily worked with the raptors in the park. While the Navy and Air Force are separate branches of the U.S. military, Kayla and Grady's shared experience in this field may serve as the origin of their relationship prior to helping him and Claire with their efforts in Jurassic World Dominion.

The other most interesting takeaway from Wise's Jurassic World Dominion character details is that she is using her pilot skills towards flying "mostly dinosaur stuff" and tease that "it could be anything." With none of the film's trailers thus far indicating any central human antagonist, it would be interesting to learn whether Kayla is truly on the side of Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire or whether she has been working with one of the more sinister corporations that have been at the heart of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises thus far. Only time will tell when Jurassic World Dominion hits theaters on June 10.
