The Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom synopsis teases what's next for our heroes, as well as a giant conspiracy. Universal relaunched the Jurassic Park franchise two years ago in grand fashion. Jurassic World crushed expectations and went on to break several box office records, before Star Wars: The Force Awakens re-broke those records later that year. To no one's surprise, the $1.6 billion hit gave the studio plenty of confidence to move forward with plans for a sequel, though what would come next was not clear.

More details on the Jurassic World sequel have been unveiled this week, culminating with the launch of the Fallen Kingdom trailer. The footage and other marketing materials have shown the destruction and turmoil that awaits Isla Nublar, its dinosaur natives, and those that will risk their lives to save them. Along the way, however, they will encounter even more trouble.

Universal Pictures released a synopsis for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, to go along with the trailer. The plot summary reveals a four year time gap between the two Jurassic World movies, while also providing further insight into the main characters' motivations. You can read the synopsis in full, below:

It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before. Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The Fallen Kingdom trailer makes no reference to a conspiracy, so it is good to know there is something bigger going on than what has been shown so far. Isla Nublar is on the brink of being completely wiped away, so it remains to be seen what type of conspiracy is involved and how it fits into the story. Hopefully, it is a natural part of the film's narrative, as it could just add to an already busy movie. Director J.A. Bayona's previous efforts would tend to suggest he can make it all work.

Unlike the conspiracy element, the trailer does back up these character motivations. Claire is clearly the one recruiting Owen on this adventure. She's not only the leader here, but her interest in preserving the dinosaurs marks a major change to her previous mindset. Instead, it is Owen who is a bit hesitant to head back to the park - though the idea of rescuing Blue is too much for him to pass up. The trailer and synopsis don't focus on the film's supporting characters much (save for Jeff Goldblum's return as Dr. Ian Malcolm), so fans will have to wait to find out how they factor in.
