New promotional artwork for next summer's Jurassic World 2 seems to suggest the Indominus Rex will be making a return to the big screen in the sequel. After Universal's soft reboot of their iconic sci-fi franchise stormed through the box office record books and took home $1.6 billion worldwide, the studio wasted no time in moving a followup through development, bringing in director J.A. Bayona to call the shots (in place of Jurassic World helmsman Colin Trevorrow, who is preoccupied with Star Wars: Episode IX). Jurassic World 2 is currently in production ahead of its June 2018 premiere, with only set photos and quotes from the cast cluing fans in as far as plot details.
One of the things that is known about the project is it'll feature plenty of familiar faces, including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and the (hopefully) triumphant return of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm. If a new piece of advertising for the movie is to be believed, it won't just be humans coming back for another dinosaur adventure. The big bad from the first Jurassic World, the Indominus Rex, might be returning for another go-around as well.
Appearing in the newest issue of the magazine License Global (hat tip Coming Soon) is what amounts to a teaser poster for Jurassic World 2. It consists of nothing more than an extreme close-up of a dinosaur face, focusing on an eye glaring as it presumably hunts out prey. You can check it out for yourself in the space below:
There's no telling for sure if this is the Indominus being depicted, but the dinosaur on the poster certainly bears resemblance to the creature that terrorized amusement part attendees back in 2015 (at least from this angle). Should the Indominus return, it would be a somewhat surprising development given that the last time viewers saw the hybrid, it was being dragged underwater by the mosasaurus following a battle with a raptor and the original Jurassic Park t-rex. The ending of the first Jurassic World seemed to indicate the Indominus was killed, but it's possible it could have survived the encounter. Of course, this could simply be generic imagery to drum up hype for the next Jurassic World since the studio has kept official reveals on the down low for the time being.
With over a year to go until Jurassic World 2 hits theaters, it will probably be a while before Universal revs up the proper marketing campaign for the film and highlights specifically what dinosaurs will appear in the sequel. As for now, viewers are going to have to use their imagination based on vague comments and Bayona's puppet antics to formulate their own ideas, but this early advertisement is certainly intriguing. Whether it's the Indominus or not, odds are the gang has to escape from a carnivorous monster that's hungry for whatever it can get.
