Update: Read the Jurassic World 2 Trailer Breakdown & Reveals here!

The first trailer for J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has arrived. The upcoming sequel to Colin Trevorrow's record-breaking 2015 film, Jurassic World, continues the story left off from the previous installment and is meant to take the series back to its horror roots. In Fallen Kingdom, the core characters are attempting a massive exodus, trying to save the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar from going extinct... again.

Fallen Kingdom, directed by Bayona and based on a script by Trevorrow and Safety Not Guaranteed scribe Derek Connolly, wrapped production this past July, after spending the summer filming at Pinewood Studios in London and on-location in Hawaii. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are returning as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively, in the sequel, with B.D. Wong also reprising his role as Dr. Henry Wu from Jurassic Park and Jurassic World and Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park and The Lost World.

Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom today, and the trailer (above) is expected to screen ahead of Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi as well as potentially other major films releasing during the holiday season, such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Universal's own production, Pitch Perfect 3.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom marks the fifth installment in the ongoing Jurassic Park series as well as the second installment in Universal's new Jurassic series that began with Trevorrow's 2015 film. The sequel is expected to expand the series not just plot-wise but with regard to series newcomers as well. James Cromwell is joining the franchise as John Hammond's former partner, Benjamin Lockwood, with Rafe Spall as Eli Mills and Toby Jones, Geraldine Chaplin, and Ted Levine in unspecified roles.

The Jurassic Park franchise has been gravitating towards action-adventure with each release, which is why Bayona is hoping to bring the series back to its horror-esque roots - and that's, in part, why Trevorrow believes Fallen Kingdom will be much better than Jurassic World.

Fallen Kingdom releases three years after Jurassic World hit theaters - and takes place several years after the park was overrun by dinosaurs, in-universe - and not only continues the story that film left off with Jurassic World, but also sets up the story for another potential installment. Universal Pictures has plans for an entire Jurassic World trilogy, but the threequel may be determined by how critically and commercially successful the sequel is. Considering that Trevorrow's 2015 film broke numerous box office records, it'll be interesting to see how Fallen Kingdom performs at the worldwide box office now that audiences have already gotten their nostalgia fix with Jurassic World.
