Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom producer and co-writer Colin Trevorrow has confirmed the timeline of the movie’s opening sequence. Fallen Kingdom expands on the dinosaur hybrid concept introduced in Jurassic World by introducing the Indorapter, a creature based on the design of the Indomonus Rex. Fallen Kingdom’s moody opening shows a team of mercenaries heading back to Isla Nublar to collect a sample from the body of the Indominus Rex after it was eaten by a mosasaurus in the finale of the previous movie.

The team successfully escape with their sample - after suffering a few casualties from the hungry natives. The scene also ends with the mosasaurus escaping its confines and swimming out to sea, and while no timeline is given in the movie itself, most viewers assume the sequence must happen shortly before the events of Fallen Kingdom.

It turns out this isn’t the case, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom producer and co-writer Colin Trevorrow clearing up any lingering confusion about when the opening takes place in an interview with Empire.

The opening sequence is set just after [Jurassic World]. There’s 3 years that pass. We didn’t put that type up onto the screen, but the opening scene could even be weeks after or a month after, and then time passes to allow them to create that creature.

The creature Trevorrow refers to is the Indoraptor, who becomes the main antagonist of the final act. The opening scene of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a moody one, with director J.A. Bayona showing off his flair for creepy visuals. While the lack of an exact timeline for the scene doesn’t ultimately hurt the movie, an indication of when it's supposed to be happening might have cleared up some questions. On the other hand, if the scene takes place years before the rest of the story, how has the giant mosasaurus been able to roam the seas undetected for so long?

While opinion is divided on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - with some viewers finding it an enjoyable blockbuster while others felt it was too silly and littered with plot holes - the movie boldly sets the course for the next adventure. By blowing up the original island the filmmakers are literally doing away with the past, and the series appears to make good on the Jurassic World title.

After sitting out Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Colin Trevorrow will return to direct Jurassic World 3, which is due 2021. Fallen Kingdom left plenty of plotlines dangling, and Trevorrow has indicated the movie’s tone will be more in line with Jurassic Park than the most recent sequels. He’s also teased some classic characters could return, too.
