One of the biggest surprises to come out of 2015 was not how successful of a return Star Wars: The Force Awakens was, but that Jurassic World turned out to be a smash hit. The film broke nearly every record in the books (before The Force Awakens re-broke those same records), reigniting audience interest in the franchise. Given the success of the first film, an announcement that Jurassic World 2 was in the works came as no surprise.

With Colin Trevorrow off to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, the franchise's reins have been passed along to J.A. Bayona. He will be joined by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and plenty of new faces as well. And with The Get Down's Justice Smith taking the new young male lead, it looks as though Bayona may have just found a new female lead as well.

Variety is reporting that Daniella Pineda has joined the cast of Jurassic World 2 in a "key role." Pineda is currently starring in The Detour for TBS, so this role would mark her first appearance in a major Hollywood blockbuster. With little details on the plot so far being made public, it is difficult to say how Pineda's character will factor into the story.

As there was no character information released with this casting announcement, Pineda could easily be involved with any faction of characters in the sequel. While we do not know exactly what Claire and Owen have been up to since, they could be making an effort to make sure further exploitations of dinosaurs do not continue. Pineda could be involved with them on this quest, or she could be on the opposite side of things and work with BD Wong and InGen as they look to further militarize these creatures for their benefit.

Fortunately, more information on the film should be made known in the coming months as the sequel gears up to start production in March. With Toby Jones and Rafe Spall also already on board, Pineda could be the final major casting decision left. When Jones and Spall were reported to join, the report indicated two key roles that were still being tested. As Variety was the outlet to report both of these stories, it would be odd for Pineda's key role to not be one of the two previously described. When you also consider Justice Smith's addition, these two could be the last pieces to the puzzle. That said, smaller roles could still be in the casting process, so stay tuned to Screen Rant for further developments.
