The first reactions for Disney's Jungle Cruise are in, and they largely praise the Mouse House's latest live-action adventure. Following movies like Cruella and Mulan, which took animated classics and gave them a live-action spin, Jungle Cruise is taking the route once pioneered by Pirates of the Caribbean. Based on the Disney World ride of the same name, the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed movie looks to apply a thrilling adventure to the familiar amusement park attraction. After being delayed from last year, Jungle Cruise arrives in theaters and on Disney+ via Premier Access next weekend.

The movie stars Emily Blunt as Dr. Lily Houghton, a researcher eagerly looking for a mystical, legendary tree that holds incredible healing properties. She enlists riverboat captain Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) to bring her and her brother (Jack Whitehall) through the jungle in search of this tree, though their journey proves to be a dangerous one as they encounter a whole host of villains. Jungle Cruise also stars Édgar Ramirez, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti.

So far, much of the praise for Jungle Cruise pertains to the sheer amount of fun it contains. Many have compared it to Indiana JonesRomancing the Stone, and, yes, Pirates of the Caribbean. Whether this will lead to a franchise in the vein of the latter remains to be seen, though Johnson recently hinted Jungle Cruise 2 is already being discussed. It helps that the central pairing of Johnson and Blunt appears to be an excellent one, though many of the reactions also singled out performances from Whitehall and Plemons. Though not without flaws, Jungle Cruise so far sounds like a fun summer adventure.

It will be quite interesting to see how the movie fares in its first weekend. Disney has managed to find some success with movies released both in theaters and on Premier Access, but the domestic box office still remains in recovery mode following last year's devastating losses. Positive reviews for Jungle Cruise could bolster its chances, but the full scope of the movie's critical consensus won't be clear until later. For now, though, Disney's latest is riding some solid pre-release buzz.
