Dwayne Johnson Confirms Jungle Cruise 2 Talks Are Already Happening

Dwayne Johnson confirms talks for Jungle Cruise 2 are already getting under way. Following the immense success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Disney is hoping to make lightning strike twice with Jungle Cruise. Much like Pirates, the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed movie is based on a Walt Disney World ride, though it expands the attraction's world considerably through the introduction of characters like Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and Frank Wolff (Johnson). Jungle Cruise debuted this weekend in theaters and on Disney+ via its Premier Access platform.

The adventure at the center of Jungle Cruise kicks off when Lily enlists Frank to ferry her and her brother (Jack Whitehall) up the river in search of a mythical tree with unparalleled healing properties. Along the way, they encounter cursed conquistadors (led by Edgar Ramirez's Aguirre) and German prince Joachim (Jesse Plemons), all of whom want to find the tree for their own purposes. Jungle Cruise sets up a vibrant world for potential follow-ups, and it sounds like Disney is already taking them into consideration.

Johnson has spent the weekend celebrating Jungle Cruise's debut, and he shared an interesting bit of information about the movie's future. While thanking someone for their kind words about the film, Johnson wrote that "we have a sequel meeting next weekend." One might say that's rather fast, but the actor had hinted there were thoughts about a Jungle Cruise 2 well before the movie's debut.

Jungle Cruise has earned mixed reviews from critics, but the fan response appears to be far more enthusiastic. Over the weekend, Johnson revealed the movie's Rotten Tomatoes audience score is the highest one of his career. At the box office, Jungle Cruise debuted to a better-than-expected $34 million domestically and an additional $30 million on Disney+. While that doesn't necessarily guarantee the movie will be a financial success, it does confirm there is interest in these characters and their world. A Jungle Cruise 2 isn't too far out of the question.

As to what Jungle Cruise 2 could be about, that's a different question. It seems likely that the franchise could take the Indiana Jones route and offer up a new adventure with every installment. The first movie introduced some deep mythology that could receive greater exploration in a sequel, or it could ignore everything touched upon there and focus on a new legend. One thing is certain though: Johnson and Blunt both need to be involved. As Johnson said, the Jungle Cruise 2 talks are just getting started, and only time will tell where they will lead.
