Welcome to the Jungle is a partial continuation of the beloved 1995 Jumanji movie and stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan. The film has earned largely positive reviews from critics and has been making headlines ever since it hit theaters back in December. That's in no small thanks to the movie's stellar run at the box office - one that has now seen it surpass one of the most talked about (if not the most talked about) superhero tentpoles of 2017, commercially speaking.
As reported by The Wrap, Welcome to the Jungle's global box office gross is expected to rise to $822 million, once the worldwide box office totals for this past weekend have been added up. If so, the film will have officially passed Diana Prince's $821 million worldwide take, as well as the global box office grosses for Wonder Woman's fellow 2017 superhero movies Justice League and Logan.
Last year was particularly profitable for superhero movies, but it seems that the star power of The Rock has done it again. Welcome to the Jungle currently ranks at #9 among 2017's biggest blockbusters worldwide, trailing films like Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. That being said, the Jumanji sequel has already passed Homecoming in the domestic market and is setting its sights on the rest of its competition. Speaking of the web-slinger, Welcome to the Jungle is now among Sony's top 5 biggest movies of all time, where it is joined by four of Spider-Man's six solo films to date.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure overtook Jumanji at the domestic box office this past weekend, but Welcome to the Jungle remains well ahead of its competition in terms of overall takings. Welcome to the Jungle still has some catching up to do before it surpasses 2017's Marvel Cinematic Universe releases at the worldwide box office, but it may yet get there within the next month or so. Discussions of a potential third Jumanji movie are starting to become more and more serious by the day - and the ever-increasing box office total for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will give Sony all the more reason to want to keep this franchise going, now that it's been successfully revived.
