Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has now released a short look at the second theatrical trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, just a few days ahead of the full trailer’s premiere online. While Johnson’s Baywatch reboot may not have been as successful as audiences may have been hoping for, The Rock is set to be taking on yet another beloved familiar cinematic property this year with Jumanji. While there may have been some initial hesitation amongst Jumanji fans in regards to the new film, Welcome to the Jungle has done a good job so far at selling itself as one of the bigger potential hits of this year’s holiday movie season.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, the film will offer a slightly modern take on the Jumanji story, with its lead group of teenagers being sucked into the Jumanji world not through a board game, but this time, through an old-school video game. Once they are transported into the virtual world, the kids discover they have been transformed into the game’s four various avatars, played by The Rock (Dr. Smolder Bravestone), Kevin Hart (Moose Finbar), Jack Black (Professor Shelly Oberon), and Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse).
There’s still a few months left until Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is released in theaters, but in anticipation of the film, Sony is planning on debuting the second full-length trailer for the film online this Wednesday. Just in case fans weren’t already looking forward to the new trailer, though, The Rock took it upon himself to release a small, exciting teaser for the new trailer on Twitter. You can check it out for yourselves, above.
Considering the still highly-beloved nature of the 1990s Jumanji film, Welcome to the Jungle has some high expectations to live up to amongst its fans, especially following the passing of Jumanji star Robin Williams a few years ago. It was smart then that Sony chose not to make Welcome to the Jungle a complete reboot of the Jumanji franchise, but rather just another film set within the same world as the 1990s adaptation.
As the first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle revealed, the film promises to be a much larger and more adrenaline-fueled adventure than the 1990s movie, which was limited by the technology and filmmaking capabilities available during the time it was made in. So, with a strong comedic angle on the story and the main cast of popular movie stars leading the way, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has all the makings of being a fun, family-oriented alternative to other blockbusters like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Thor: Ragnarok later this year. Whether or not its success will manage to live up to these expectations, however, will have to wait to be seen.
