Publisher Outright Games announced via a teaser trailer that Jumanji: The Video Game, an officially licensed game based on the movie franchise, will be releasing in November on all major platforms. Jumanji 3 is set to release this December on the big screen, but that now won’t be the only screen that the Jumanji franchise is featured on.
An all-star cast headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson helped breathe new life into the Jumanji franchise with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017, an indirect sequel to the classic film starring the late Robin Williams. This soft reboot of the franchise added the twist that the mystical Jumanji board game transforms into a video game that sucks people into its game world and transforms them into in-game avatars. After a successful run at the box office, Sony quickly announced it would continue the story with Jumanji 3, which brings back the original cast with some notable additions. Jumanji 3 recently finished filming ahead of its December release.
Fans of the franchise won’t have to wait long to be transported to the world of Jumanji, as long as they’re open to a new medium. Bandai Namco Europe, along with publisher Outright Games and developer Funsolve, announced that Jumani: The Video Game will release on November 15 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Up to four players can connect via online or split-screen play and assume the role of avatars like Dr. Smoulder Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, Franklin “Mouse” Finbar or Professor Shelly Oberon to uncover the Jewels of Jumanji and find their way home. Check out the trailer below.
While the above teaser trailer doesn’t offer much besides a look at the cast of Welcome to the Jungle in Unreal Engine 4, Richard Tawn, the founder and director of Funsolve, is excited for more features and reveals in the near future. “This is a dream come true for our studio,” Tawn said in a press release, “Adapting the exotic, dangerous and hilarious world of Jumanji into a video game has pushed us to create something truly special.”
Licensed games based on movies have become a rarer breed in this era, and a game based on a movie about a supernatural game seems like great brand synergy. Having a game release this close to the sequel will help build hype around Jumanji 3. The world of Jumanji is ripe to explore and has a diverse cast of characters to make for an engaging co-op experience. It'll be interesting to see what different abilities each character will have, and how they can interact with each other and overcome all of the obstacles that Jumanji: The Video Game has to offer.
