After Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the biggest hits of 2017 and renewed interest in the franchise, it was only a matter of time before a sequel was made. As it turns out, the wait was even shorter than expected as Jumanji: The Next Level came out two short years later and was another big hit.

The sequel found the four friends from the original going back into the video game along with some new characters as well. This saw the return of the fun avatars from the first film and some clever new additions. But with all the video game madness going on, it's possible that the viewers might have missed some fun hidden details in the movie.

Bethany's Growth

The first film introduced the audience to the young teens who would find themselves trapped inside the game. One of the teens is Bethany, a pretty but self-centered popular girl who becomes trapped inside the body of Jack Black's avatar.

When we meet Bethany in the first film, she is seen taking selfies which speaks to her self-obsessed behavior. However, this film opens with a beautiful tropical landscape and we see Bethany taking a photo of it, hinting that she has learned to appreciate deeper things in life.

Fridge's Necklace

Another of the young teen characters is Fridge, a popular and arrogant young man who learns humility after the events of the first film. He is also a big and intimidating football player who is stuck inside the diminutive avatar of Kevin Hart.

Fridge is seen wearing a necklace in the film with the number 94 on it in a font that seems to suggest it is his jersey number for football. Interestingly, Dwayne Johnson wore the same number during his football career earlier in life.

Fixing The Light Bulb

One of the best new additions to this movie is Danny DeVito as Spencer's grandfather, who is staying with the family as he recovers from hip surgery. Of course, this leads him to also be sucked into the game which makes for some of the funniest moments in the movie.

When we first meet the elderly man, he is perched unsteadily on a ladder and attempting to fix a light bulb. This hints at his final moments of saving the day as he holds the sacred amulet up to the sun to win the game.

Lawrence Of Arabia

The new film not only introduces new characters but also some new locations for the game. After arriving in the similar jungle setting, the characters are quickly dropped off in a new desert setting which comes with all new threats.

As the characters look out over the vast desert landscape, the music swells in an epic fashion that might sound familiar to some viewers. The score is very similar and certainly a nod to the famous theme from Lawrence of Arabia which is also largely set in a similar desert landscape.

Short And Tall Pairing

Jumanji 3 Danny Glover

The movie has a lot of fun switching things up when it comes to which characters end up in which avatars. Instead of Spencer and Fridge inhabiting the bodies of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, this time Spencer's grandfather and his old friend Milo (Danny Glover) get those avatars.

The casting of Danny DeVito and Danny Glover feels intentional as it seems to mirror the dynamic shared by Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson. DeVito and Hart are known as short comedic actors while Johnson and Glover are tall actors known for action movies.

The Dance Fight

Karen Gillan's badass action hero avatar is once again taken over by the timid Martha. However, just like the first film, she manages to find her own courage and strength in this body and kicks a lot of butt while doing it.

As the heroes face off with the bad guys near the end of the film, they find themselves overrun and in trouble. Then they have the bright idea to turn on the radio and Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way" plays, inspiring Martha into action mode. This is the same song used for Martha's dance fight in the first film.

Cake

One of the funniest aspects of these films is the list of strengths and weaknesses each of the avatars has. The more impressive characters like Dwayne Johnson and Karen Gillan's avatars have equally impressive lists. Avatars like Kevin Hart and Jack Black are more embarrassing.

One of Hart's biggest weaknesses which killed him once in the first film is cake. Fridge is humiliated by this fact, but back in the real world at the end of the movie, he is shown to be hesitant to eat a piece of cake. Could these weaknesses have spilled over into the real world?

Jurgen The Brutal

This movie introduces a pretty effective villain inside the game. Jurgen the Brutal is played by Game of Thrones actor Rory McCann who makes for an imposing foe, even when he goes up against Johnson in their fights.

However, there is a hidden secret to the character that has implications for the future of the franchise. The filmmakers have confirmed that Jurgen isn't a character inside the game but an avatar being controlled by someone outside the game.

Nora

Though the new Jumanji movies are much different than the original film, they do feature some clear nods to what came before. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle featured a nice nod to Robin Williams' character Alan Parrish.

This movie connects the films even more by featuring a character from the first movie. Bebe Neuwirth appears at the end of the film as Nora, the aunt of the two young characters from the 1995 film.

The Real World

Robin Williams and the kids look worried in Jumanji

The appearance of Nora is a fun nod to the original film, but it seems like the franchise is setting up the possibility of returning to its roots. The post-credit scene finds a repairman finding the video game in the basement and poking around at it. We then see the teen friends downtown when a herd of ostrich run by.

The original Jumanji did not feature people sucked into the game to play but rather the game itself escaping into the real world. It could be that that is the focus of the third film.
