Warning: Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen 0

The new trailer for the Jujutsu Kaisen movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, hints that the original story from the manga is going to be changed for the big screen. Adaptations of works into other mediums are very prone to changing around the source material, whether it be through expanding on the source material or outright cutting content out. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will likely also make changes to the original manga, and based on its trailer, the focus will be primarily towards the former.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel story adapting the manga volume of the same name. The story is centered around Yuta Okkotsu, a new student at Jujutsu High who wants to rid himself of being cursed by his deceased friend and first love, Rika Orimoto, and help her pass on to the afterlife. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is only four chapters long, but with each chapter being about two to three times as long as a typical chapter of a weekly manga, there’s more than enough material to make up about two hours of film time.

That being said, it’s still likely that the film is going to change things by adding in content that wasn’t in the original story. The trailer shows Yuta and Rika meeting each other at a hospital, something that was never shown in the original manga, only detailed in extra notes included in the collected trade. Based on that, it’s likely that the Jujutsu Kaisen anime film will expand on their relationship, and possibly include other details about their characters that weren’t shown in this part of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga such as Rika’s parents mysteriously dying, the hardships she dealt with because of that, and how her curse put a strain on Yuta’s relationship with his family.

The trailer also implies that the fight against Suguru Geto’s forces will be expanded upon in the film. Part of the climax of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in the manga revolves around Geto having curses and curse users attacking Shinjuku and Kyoto on Christmas Eve. The fight was barely shown in the manga, but the trailer shows scenes of Gojo fighting in the battle that weren’t there in the manga, so the battle will likely receive more focus than it did in the source material to show off Satoru Gojo's powers; it was briefly mentioned that Aoi Todo participated in the battle and killed a great number of powerful curses on his own, so it’s possible that the movie could even show that, as well.

Whatever the case, it’s easy enough to conclude that the Jujutsu Kaisen movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, is going to add details to the story that weren’t originally there. Jujutsu Kaisen is already regarded as a great series, and the movie would be no different in that regard. As such, giving the audience even more to work with would only be to the film’s benefit.
