Empowered by the demon lord Cyttorak, the Juggernaut is imbued with unstoppable momentum that uses magic to break the laws of physics. So what happens when Cain Marko's unstoppable force meets a truly immovable object?
Cain Marko, Professor X's stepbrother, became the Juggernaut by sneaking into a cave with Charles, obtaining the Crimson Gem, and becoming the human avatar of Cyttorak, an extra-dimensional entity from the Crimson Cosmos. Although he has historically been susceptible to psychic and mental attacks, which has put him at odds with his brother Charles Xavier, Juggernaut's strength and stamina are nearly unmatched. His most important power is the ability to manipulate momentum, which makes him functionally unstoppable. Juggernaut's powers are often depicted inconsistently, but at the height of his abilities, he can barrel through any obstacle. This forces his enemies to find new, creative ways to defeat him, for instance by making sure he has nothing to run on.
Uncanny Avengers #1, written by Rick Remender and drawn by John Cassaday, introduces Red Skull's S-Men. One of the founding members is Mzee, who was granted the powers of an African god by a mystic artifact known as the "Crooked Emerald." Mzee's family was killed by a group of Magneto's henchmen, and this instilled a lifelong hatred of mutants within him. Since the Crooked Emerald holds the spirit of the African Lord of Physical Will, Mzee is imbued with "impossible strength" specifically stated to be beyond anything on Earth.
It's clear that Juggernaut was the inspiration for Mzee, as the two characters share incredibly similar lore. Juggernaut's abilities come from the Crimson Gem, while Mzee's come from the Crooked Emerald, with both empowered by gods, and both operating according to mystic 'rules' rather than pure strength. The difference is that while Juggernaut manipulates momentum, Mzee manipulates strength. Usually, Juggernaut is capable of running down far stronger opponents due to the mystical nature of his powers, but what would happen if he was to run head first into one of Mzee's punches? Two mystically unstoppable forces would meet, finally answering the question of how Juggernaut's powers would react to such a situation.
While Mzee was beaten by Thor (thanks to the technicality that Asgardians aren't from Earth), and later killed by Magneto, in Marvel Comics characters come back all the time. Fans deserve to see a Mzee vs Juggernaut clash, both to finally give Cain a worthy enemy, and to answer how their powers could interact. Marvel may have already provided an answer, although it doesn't involve Mzee. A powered-up Juggernaut once punched through reality itself, which seems like a compelling answer to what happens when two unstoppable forces meet. Even if this was the outcome, it would still be something to see.
While Mzee is currently out of action, nothing is impossible in comics, and the character has a mountain of promise beyond his precious few appearances (just like the rest of Red Skull's S-Men.) Hopefully, the champion of the Crooked Emerald will one day face the bearer of the Crimson Gem, and fans can see how Juggernaut's unstoppable momentum fares against irrestible strength.
