Actor Jude Law recently compared the level of secrecy that Marvel Studios demands versus that of the Harry Potter franchise. Law is currently apart of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Harry Potter franchises, as he's starring in Captain Marvel and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The English actor is rumored to be playing Mar-Vell in the upcoming superhero flick, and will also be playing a young Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts 2.
Marvel and Harry Potter movies usually turn into massive blockbusters, but they're also often some of the most anticipated films of the year. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is Fandango's most anticipated movie of the Fall, and Marvel films like Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther dominated the box office on their opening weekends. With the level of anticipation for films in both franchises, Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios clearly want to keep their projects under wraps to avoid leaks. While that doesn't always happen, the actors in the movies play a big part in keeping secrets.
During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (via Cinema Blend) Law commented that the security and secrecy for Marvel movies is a lot crazier than what he experienced while working on Fantastic Beasts 2. When asked about the level of security for both franchises, Law stated:
I think it might be this British-American difference. With Fantastic Beasts, they're like 'We assume you're not going to give away any of these secrets. And if you do, we're going to tell you not to again and we may quietly kill you. In Marvel, it's like, 'Don't you f****** ever tell anybody anybody about this!'
While secrecy surrounding future Fantastic Beasts movies may get more intense as the series progresses, the MCU is likely to remain just as secretive as it's always been. That being said, other projects have gone through just as much security to avoid spoilers from reaching the general public. For example, Rian Johnson never connected to the internet when he typed up Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and HBO used devices to deactivate drones that flew over filming locations for Game of Thrones.
Since spoilers and leaks can potentially hurt movies at the box office, it makes sense why studios would want to keep the secrets of a film quiet. That being said, Marvel seems to be way more intense when it comes to keeping their actors quiet. With Marvel now having released 20 films, it's become increasingly harder for fans to avoid spoilers. That being said, some actors like Law are good at avoiding secrets in interviews, which no doubt keeps movie studios like Marvel and Warner Bros. happy.
