'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' Trailer

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Trailer

The 2008 (loose) adaptation of Journey to the Center of the Earth was one of the first major forays into modern 3D films. Thanks to pretty good box office returns and DVD sales, we’re now getting a sequel.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island – starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Michael Caine – is based, to some degree, on Jules Vern’s The Mysterious Island, Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, and Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. Today, we’ve got the trailer.

It’s a shame that Dwayne Johnson slums in these sorts of films from time to time. No one ever expected him to be the next Marlon Brando, but he has presence to spare and has proven his ability to entertain time and again (The Rundown, Fast Five). Here, he’s relegated to bouncing cherries off his pectorals and at the audience, 3D-style.

Journey 2 was directed by Brad Peyton of Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore fame – hence the reason it looks below grade in almost ever conceivable way. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with films that are basically fluffy family fare, as long as they’re good fluffy family fare. This thing looks like it was filmed for television, the above-par CGI notwithstanding.

Check out the official summary below:

Young adventurer Sean receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist–a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter, they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shock waves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

For those wondering why Dwayne Johnson has taken over the role of Josh Hutcherson’s guardian in the film from Brendan Frasier, Frasier played Hutcherson’s uncle in the first film. Here, Johnson plays his new step-father.

How does Journey 2 look to you guys, Screen Ranters? Funny? Stupid? Cheap? Drop us a line in the comments.
