Joseph Gordon-Levitt has become something of a jack of all trades in recent years, with credits including roles as an actor, a screenwriter, and a director – most notably in his directorial debut Don Jon from 2013 – now firmly set under his belt. After making a name for himself initially as a child actor throughout the 1990s, Gordon-Levitt went on to make waves in Hollywood as an adult performer in his own right – perhaps most notably including the independent rom-com 500 Days of Summer from 2009 and the Christopher Nolan films Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.
Fresh off his work with acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Stone on the political/thriller Snowden from just last month, the latest word has Gordon-Levitt eyeing a brand new role in an upcoming sci-fi film. Directed by British filmmaker Marc Munden – who developed a reputation for himself on TV in the UK – and screenwriter Jack Thorne – who worked on The Sandman comic book adaptation back when Gordon-Levitt was going to direct it – Sovereign is all set to feature Gordon-Levitt as a troubled intergalactic traveler cast alone and adrift on an unmanned space station.
According to Deadline, Sovereign places Gordon-Levitt front and center as man forced to confront his own complicity in the dissolution of his marriage – and the abandonment of himself by an entire space station crew. Given the fact that Munden and Throne are no strangers when it comes to crafting compelling drama (their past work includes collaborating on the hit Channel 4 miniseries National Treasure), Gordon-Levitt is probably in good hands in the making of his next big starring vehicle.
Following his work on the script for the original London stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this past summer, Thorne will be providing the second pass on the script for Sovereign – based on the first draft penned by Geoff Tock and Gregory Weidman. The movie will additionally be co-produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment and Arrival fame. Nick Meyer and Marc Schaberg of Sierra/Affinity will finance the project, oversee international sales, and executive produce alongside Kelly McCormick and Gordon-Levitt.
Gordon-Levitt has not steered audiences very far wrong with his most recent slate of films (including, original sci-fi offerings like Inception and Looper) , and with any luck Sovereign will prove to be another interesting turn for the acclaimed Hollywood performer. Only time will tell how capably the sci-fi project is handled, so here’s to hoping for the very best when the movie finally sees theatrical release.
We’ll bring you more details on Sovereign as they become available.
