Actress Zazie Beetz has revealed that the script for Joker was being rewritten while filming was happening. While there have been several actors to play the Clown Prince of Crime over the years, Joaquin Phoenix is playing the Joker for an R-rated origin story about the supervillain.

So far, there hasn't been a lot revealed about Joker. Production for Joker started back at the beginning of September 2018 and wrapped filming in mid-December. In between that time, fans got their first look at Phoenix as the Joker as well as several glimpses of Joker through set photos. The film was directed by Todd Phillips and was written by Phillips and Scott Silver, with the film aimed towards an R-rating. While the film went through production last year, it looks like the script wasn't completely finished at that point.

When asked about Joker in an interview with MTV News (via Comic Book), Beetz revealed that she hadn't even seen a cut of the film yet, but that the "script was great". She also explained that "We rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it. Literally, we would go into Todd [Phillips]’ trailer and then write the scene for the night and then do it." Beetz is most known today for her role in Deadpool 2 as the character Domino. The actress is jumping over to DC for Joker but instead of playing a superhero, Beetz is playing Sophie Dumond, a single mother who has some type of connection to Arthur Fleck. Besides Beetz and Phoenix, other notable cast members for Joker include Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin, Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne, Dante Pereira-Olson as a young Bruce Wayne, and Douglas Hodge as Alfred Pennyworth.

While many people are looking forward to seeing a solo Joker film that also doubles as an origin story, it could be worrisome that the film was being rewritten at the same time of filming. Most movies go through reshoots and rewrites, but having the film go through continuous rewrites while filming took place could spell trouble. That being said, Beetz didn't seem too concerned about her comments during the interview, so fans may have nothing to worry about. Either way, Joker wrapped filming in December 2018, so the film is currently in post-production with several months before the public even sees a trailer. Needless to say, Phillips and his crew still have plenty of time to make sure Joker is everything fans hope it'll be.
