The Joker is one of the most insane, twisted individuals in the history of superhero comics. The Batman villain will go to extreme lengths to pull off a plan as his madness drives him to do crazy things. But, one member of the Justice League has the ability to cure his madness - even if it's only temporary.

In JLA #15 (1998) from Grant Morrison, Gary Frank, Howard Porter, Greg Land, John Dell, Bob McLeod, Pat Garrahy, and Ken Lopez, the Injustice Gang finds themselves in direct conflict with the Justice League. Lex Luthor uses the reality-warping Philosopher's Stone to control the alien Jemm and fight the League. After defeating Luthor, the JLA tries to return the object to Metron (the observer), however, he reveals the real stone is in the hands of the Joker. So how do they get the stone out the Clown Prince of Crime's psychotic hands? A little mind manipulation.

Joker uses the stone to create massive seismic disturbances on Earth in an attempt to create a "ten-thousand-mile-long grin from South America to Asia Minor!" As Joker promises to cause more upheaval, Martian Manhunter uses his telepathic powers to manipulate the villain's brain. Joker suddenly is cured of his madness and asks himself "what have I been doing with my life?" and says he's "been insane.. oh my god what have I done?"

Joker Manhunter

Martian Manhunter manages to pry some humanity from Joker's brain. However, the maneuver isn't permanent as Martian Manhunter describes Joker's mind as a "storm raging." But, the temporary hold does work. As Joker laments that he needs to fix all the damage he's done, the Flash quickly grabs the Philosopher's Stone from him and returns it to Metron. Ultimately, the Joker's madness was only temporarily cured. But, the fact that Martian Manhunter could rewrite his brain so that he still had humanity left inside was somewhat shocking. Joker is often portrayed as having a completely dislodged psyche, but in this case, Martian Manhunter accessed a part of his brain to change him so that he wasn't a bad guy at all. It's too bad Joker's brain is like a raging storm and he can't be permanently fixed - because in the issue, it appears the Joker can be redeemed.

Although, it took all of Martian Manhunter's power to cure him, even for a few minutes - so, clearly, there's no easy long-term cure for the Joker. But, if the Justice League needs a temporary fix, Martian Manhunter's powers can come in handy.
