With the season right upon us, it appears that Joker and Captain Marvel are the most popular 2019 Halloween costumes. This may not come as a surprise to the general population as Todd Phillips' Joker has taken the title of the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time in just a few short weeks as it recently crossed the $800 million worldwide mark. And even though the MCU's Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, faced a bit of controversy after it hit theaters, it still took in over $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide.

With the title character of Joker played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is receiving major awards buzz for his portrayal, people have been flocking to the now infamous set of stairs in the Bronx, NY, which he dances down in full costume in the second half of the film. And with Captain Marvel being the first female-led solo superhero film in the Marvel universe, it's really no wonder that there was such a strong response with audiences around the globe.

According to EW, who received their stats from FandangoNOW, movie fans have spoken as they have chosen their top 2019 Halloween costume picks: Joker for the male demographic and Captain Marvel for the female population. FandangoNOW revealed exclusively to EW that they did a survey of "more than 1,000 millennial film fans" and asked them what film characters of the year were their top picks in terms dressing up for the holiday season and those two were overwhelmingly the top choices.

Also according to the survey, it seems fans have also taken to dressing up as Lupita Nyong'o's chillingly alarming character "Red" in the one-piece jumpsuit from Jordan Peele's Us. Also, Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers from the upcoming A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is another popular choice as well as the much talked about "May Queen" from the indie psychological thriller of the summer, Midsommar. The survey also found people taking inspiration for group costumes from the MCU's Avengers: Endgame and the upcoming Frozen II

It's always a lot of fun to see just which films and popular characters made such a cultural impact on the masses over the past year that people decide to dress up as them for Halloween. For the character of Joker, all people really need is a tacky red suit and some green hair, eye and face makeup and they're all set to dance and flail around their Halloween party for the night. For Captain Marvel, it might take a bit more planning to get her look just right, as she wears that stunning blue, red and gold suit, but with the right expertise and a little finesse, it can be pulled off.
