Lady Gaga is in talks to play Harley Quinn in DC's Joker 2 movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. Warner Bros. and DC Films went in a surprising direction a few years ago by announcing plans for a Joker solo movie that did not involve Jared Leto's version of the character from Suicide Squad. The Joker movie instead brought Phoenix into the leading role and is not part of the DC Extended Universe. Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker made over $1 billion worldwide and earned Phoenix an Oscar win for his incredible performance.

Due to the overwhelming success of the movie, there have been talks about a Joker sequel happening since 2019. It was not clear how close the project was to happening for quite some time, but Phillips delivered a big update last week. He teased the movie's finished script with an image of Phoenix reading it, which also came with the Joker 2 title reveal: Joker: Folie à Deux. The title sparked speculation that Harley Quinn or a second Joker could appear as it references two or more people having a similar mental disorder.

Now, it appears that Harley Quinn will be in Joker 2 and could be played by Lady Gaga. According to the report from THR, Gaga is in talks to play Joker's long-time comic book love interest. Margot Robbie currently plays Harley in the DCEU, but now Gaga will have the opportunity to play the role in Joker 2 if a deal makes. Gaga's Harley casting also comes with the news that the sequel is meant to be a musical.

Gaga's potential casting as Harley Quinn in Joker 2 would be another massive project for the performer. She made waves in 2018 by starring in A Star Is Born opposite Bradley Cooper, and her performance led to an Oscar nomination. Gaga's most recent performance was in Ridley Scott's House of Gucci, where she was an awards contender once again for her performance, even though she fell short of earning an Academy Award nomination. However, she did discuss her thoughts on superhero movies after, suggesting she would be open to it if the project had something to say.

Assuming Gaga's deal closes for Joker 2, it appears that the movie's version of Harley Quinn met her requirement to say something meaningful. The prospect of it also being a musical could have helped entice the talented musician as well. In any case, the potential for Gaga's Harley Quinn performance is certainly an exciting development for the sequel. It is unclear if Joker 2's Harley will be fully realized as Arthur Fleck's girlfriend and fellow inmate at the Arkham State Hospital, or if she'll be an Arkham psychologist who falls for him. With the new speed of these updates, though, it seems audiences will likely learn before too long .
